Hi Nurse Beth,

I will be graduating with my MSN in Admin this May. I chose that route because my school only offers Admin, Ed or FNP. I really don't desire to work in a family practice setting. So I chose admin and plan to do a post graduate PMHNP certificate at EKU.

My question- how do you feel the overall job market is for psych NPs? I am in Michigan and about 75 minutes from the Ann Arbor/Detroit corridor. I am finding consistent postings online for need in my area, with very competitive pay around 100k baseline. I feel like the market is good, do you agree?

Dear Is the Market Good for Psych?

Thank you for your question!

Congratulations on your accomplishment.

I think Psych NPs are sitting pretty!

The job outlook for NPs overall is good, and slightly better for Psych NPs.

I can't speak to your geographical area, though.

Good luck!

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

we staff psych NP's at my place of employment but i don't know if it's the kind of work you would be interested in. I'm a nurse that works for a telemedicine company called Mind Care Solutions and our Doctors/NP's see patients via skype. these patients are in skilled nursing facilities and we have also just recently started doing corrections. all of our doctors/np's work from the comfort of their homes. we are based out of Franklin, Tn. but we have providers as far out as California. it is set up like a clinic and all appointments with patients are previously scheduled. i work the pricare side of it which is after hours and it is not as structured as the psych side meaning that the patients we see are being discharged from the hospital into a nursing facility and our providers do what you call a "tuck in" visit until the facility's regular doctor can access them the next day, these appointments are on a "pop up" basis. it's a very interesting concept and i know they pay the doctors/Np"s pretty well!!
