Surrender or revoke?

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hello nurses. I am in California. I was wondering if it's better to surrender your license or get it revoked? My ultimate goal is to be an RN again. But I was in probation and got 1 positive alcohol test. Worst case scenario is the BON will revoke it. I'm just wondering if I should surrender it before they revoke it?? Revoke sounds even more harsh.

i want to be able to get my license again ASAP. Does surrender mean I won't ever Be able to get it again? I know that if you're revoked, you may be able to apply at a certain time. Not sure about surrender. Any feedback helps!!! Thank you

I have no experience with the California BON but I would never surrender! You may not even be facing that so why give up so easily? I suggest you speak with an attorney that has experience dealing with the board and these types of issues. Worst case scenario they can negotiate on your behalf. If you surrender your license you are most likely going to have to start from scratch if/when the BON deems you eligible to re-apply. One positive test does not necessarily mean revocation.

If you still want to be a nurse. Go in front of the board and you can get a second chance with California probation. They will start your contract over. They might make you go to rehab. I came from California. I was in the Diversion program, when I moved to Florida I voluntary surrendered my license. (I wish I didn't have to do that but was required when I left their program and moved to Florida) I am 4 years into a 5 year program in FL.

Surrender/revoked is the same thing, they are both discipline. You will be reported to the national practitioner data base.

I am surprised they didn't make you go to AA meetings. It sounds like the drug testing in California has increased with weekend and holiday being day you are selected. PEth being used as routine tests is new since I left in 2007.

Hello there, so I decided to fight for my license. Got a lawyer and it appears that we will get a settlement. The CA BRN wanted to revoke probation, but I must've hired a good lawyer, he says we could do a settlement rather than a hearing. Settle for extending probation! That's good news. However today I got a letter that I have a report on the National Practitioner Data Base! It basically says I'm on probation for 3 years, but what's funny is that the action date was back in 2014 when I first got on probation. I honestly don't even remember getting on this data base back then. I'm a little confused. Anyway, I was wondering if you can work if you're on it? I'm not on the OIG (yet...) I checked it last year as well and again today. I know for the OIG you can't really work anywhere, but im not familiar with the data base?? Any info helps! Not sure if you're on one and not the other? Or both?? Or if the data base is a precursor to OIG that will soon come?!! Thank you!

You are fine you can work. Any state that you voluntary surrender/revoke and or have probation it gets sent to the national practitioner bank.

You were all ready on it if you were in probation

Oh wow, I completely don't remember! Well, during that time, I just wanted to have my license so I signed my life away with probation (the BRN allowed me to test if I opted for probation) and I wanted to hurry and get the NCLEX over! So maybe that's why I don't remember about the data base! Thank you, as long as I can work! Does it affect where I work? Or is that only for OIG? (Not on that list... Yet, and I'm scared I will be! Should I be worried??) thanks again!!!
