Background CHeck

Im looking to transfer my license via endorsement to another state. I have charges on my background but to be honest im not 100% sure what I was convicted of in the end. Does anyone know a fairly easy and inexpensive way to do a background check on myself so I can correctly fill out my application?

Two things that I can think of: 1. Call the lawyer who handled your case and ask him/her. May take a few days, but they generally keep files for about 10 years. 2. Do a judiciary case search for your state. Although, this will not work if the charges were expunged or the case is sealed. Hope this helps.

It costs $20 and should do no harm. If, when you receive it you cannot figure out if the charges listed are violations, misdemeanors or felonies you'll have to pay a bit to any lawyer to decipher it for you or ask on Avvo.

You need to know because any employment will ask and if you have old violations they are not likely to matter, but if you say "I have no record," and do, even of violations you will not be hired. Be very careful and very honest.

Most states have annullment or similar concepts whereby after x number of years you can petition to have the record expunged or annulled. It's worth doing but it is a cash cow. It cost me $450 to remove a $50 violation from over 30 years ago.

Your criminal background is a matter of public record - you should be able to go to the courthouse and get a copy for a reasonable fee. You will have to go and look up the case numbers then bring them to the clerk. The fee is usually based on the number of pages in the document and is a copying fee.

Good Luck
