Swedish nurse moving to CA

World Registration

Published

Hi everyone ☺

My name is Alidamy and I´m a nursing student from Sweden. Well Im actually Cuban but I have been in Sweden for a couple of years and I started my education here for 3 years ago (Im almost done). However my husband just got a job in California and we are planning to move there so I was hoping to find someone here who went to a Swedish nursing school and moved to the States to work?

I have been doing some research and I read that it takes time, but I would love to hear a real experience from someone who did the whole process.

I was a little bit worried about if we (with Swedish education) need to do any extra courses before we can apply for the license in the States?

I also heard that the Swedish nursing education counts as an BSN in the states? Is that true?

Well I will appreciate any help or information I can get from anyone. I feel like I have to be ready and know where to go when its time to start the whole thing.

Hopefully your husband's job will allow you to work.

Starting point would be waiting until you are in the US and have a US SSN (presuming your husband's job allows you to get one if you can work) and then once you have that you can start the application process with CA. They review your transcripts so you will need to arrange your transcripts to be sent to them once you have your US SSN.

Why not ask your transcripts department there?

They will have to play a very important part in them sending the documentation to wherever its needed.

Ask them if they have encountered any recent issues with sending them to CA, such things as breakdown of class hours, clinical hours, will your transcripts show that all your courses were done within the same exact time frame of the previous mention, as if they don't then, your non refundable application will be denied to take the ATT, assuming again you're able to provide them with a valid SSN or ITIN numbers.

It only takes one invalid piece of information to reject the application.

Ask if you can contact any more recent students or nurses who have made the journey over. Ask if they can contact you.

Is your husband already a US citizen? If not, what sort of working visa is he being granted and is there a time limitation on it?

With California, they'll need a Social Security Number and they'll need your transcripts, translated into English, if they're not already done in English. You'll need to provide proof that you've completed equivalent coursework and (most importantly) that your clinical experiences and your didactic experiences occurred in the same quarter/semester. As an example, you cannot do Pediatrics in the classroom in the Fall term and do a Pediatrics clinical rotation in the Spring.

Having all that data collated ahead of time will make life easier for you so, while you're still in Sweden, gather all that stuff now. It's likely much easier to do this in person than it will be to do this from afar by telephone or email. It would be a good idea to review the complaints/issues/information that Philippine nurses have gathered on this site because they're most impacted by this. There are thousands of Philippine nurses that have tried to get a California RN license but cannot because of one issue or another... and since you haven't attended a California RN school, you'll have to jump through all the same hoops they've had to.

Than you! Well my husband is an American citizen and im aplying already for my green card. It will also takes time so I guess I will preparing everything and start the process when I get there and get my SSN.

Tank you again

Thank you I will ask them....

Yeah he and my son are american citizen so I just set my aplication to get my green cad as his wife.

Oh ok! well I just became a member here so I will looking around to see what information I can find useful for my situation!
