osce ( observational structured clinical examination)

World Registration

Published

Hi,

I am internationally trained nurse from India. I applied for registration as RN in college of nurses of Ontario Oct 2011. They took over a year and finally determined that my education/ experience is not equivalent to those of current graduates of Canadian nursing program. They have asked me to write Observational Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and pass in order to show equivalency. My question is that have anybody else been asked to take OSCE exam and what to expect? Also what does the college consider while evaluating education as other nurses from my college have been given eligibility without fulfilling any other criteria or exam!!

@shi, the OSCE that is being discussed and required for College of Nurses of Ontario, is done in Toronto not the Philippines. If there is some sort of prep course for OSCE being offered in the Philippines, be careful that it is not being conducted by unqualified fraudsters.

Hi I am also in the same boat.i applied to cno and they told to take osce.i have both bBSc and MSc from India. Still cno told mme my eeducation is not equivalent to Canadian nursing education.i have lot of questions regarding osce.when are you planning to take oscr

Hi,

I received a letter from CNO and my OSCE result. They said:" we have determined that you have met the RN education requirement"...However, because my safe practice expired, they explained that to meet the practice requirement, I must complete a few additional courses. In their letter there is no explanation about competency gap(s). What does it mean? Did I pass the OSCE or not?

Thanks

@nicol "We have determined that you have met the RN education requirement" means you 'passed' the osce but since your proof of recent practice within three years has expired, you need to return to school. York University has a BSN for IENs program, however there is usually a wait list get in.

Thank you dishes,

I know that York University has a BSN program for IENs , and that there is a wait list for this program. Can I return to a country where I'm registered and start working as an RN to meet the practice requirement and come back again?

@nicol I think that it's possible for you to go back to your home country in order to gain proof of recent practice, but the CNO may reject it because your recent practice expired during the CNO's intial assessment. Is your proof of recent practice under 5 years? Is it possible for you to live in another province? The other provinces require proof of experience within 5 years.

Its easier to back to my home country than the other provinces. Maybe I call CNO and ask them.

Thank you for your help.:)

Hi nicol07 I have some questions regarding Osce. Would you mind giving me your email I'd. ?

Hi Nichol .I am also in the same boat.CNO advised me to take Osce. But as if now there are no available dates for osce.probably I have to wait till 2017.cno told my safe practice is expired.so what can be done if I could clear osce but if my safe practice is expired.thinking all these things I am feeling giddiness. Please help by giving valuable suggestions.

There have been some valuable suggestions made. You will either have to work as a nurse in a jurisdiction where you are already registered (ie India) long enough to meet the safe practice requirements, or you will have to return to school at a Canadian university. CNO is actually your best source of information on this process, as it's their rules you're in conflict with. Their staff can answer this sort of question much more ably and accurately than anonymous posters on a discussion board.
