Are there any foreign nurses working in New York City out there? I'd love to hear from you and your experience with CGFNS, I'd love to get some insight how you went through with their requirements.

The CGFNS has made a New York specific academic or professional evaluation service which is the CVS. The CGFNS will only verify that your education and if applicable, your local license, came from verifiable sources. New York State Education Department (NYSED) will do their own evaluation on your credentials and they will decide if it's up to their standards. The CGFNS prefers communicating directly with your school and your licensing body so expect that you won't be doing anything but to sign the transcript authorization forms and wait. The CVS can take up to 6-8 months depending on the volume of applicants. After they have made you eligible, you can expect to be granted an ATT by Pearson Vue to sit for the NCLEX-RN after 3-6 weeks.

Based on my experience with them, I will further add that you need to be on them like a fly on poop. I wasn't, and they let my application expire. I had to pay to get my application re-started. Once I started hounding though, it was cleared in a matter of weeks.

So yeah, make sure you call and call and email and then call some more lol. And doing this, get someone's name, email address and contact info. All this hounding is a lot more effective if you harass the same person.

haha...I'm pretty good with hounding people....another thing, did you have to wait that long to get your transcript filed with CGFNS? Was there a time when you had to make numerous phone calls to your school just to double check if they've done it?

No, my school was fine. I have them a prepaid envelope to make sure it got there fast. The issue was my documents sitting in CGFNS office for months before they would process them. My being able to tell them exactly when my documents got there helped a bit to get the fire lit under their bums.

True. The CGFNS needs a little push every now and then. But what I meant was you're not allowed to meddle with the communication process between your school/licensing body and the CGFNS. I learned that when I attempted to locate my authorization forms and asked if I needed to send another one to my school again since things in the snail mail system gets lost sometimes. But yes, give them an extra push just to make sure things are on track. :)

Thanks for the tip! It's good to be prepared!
