What is the thesis like in an FNP program?? How long does it take ? Any details would be great!

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

I think it depends on the program. I know the CNM program at UCSF (I know not FNP but the school teaches both FNP and CNM programs amd both are midlevel) does not require a thesis, but it is optional.

ISU previously was option for thesis or reseach proposal. I hear now there is 3rd even better option. More schools are doing away with thesis requirement.

Specializes in ICU.

While I haven't looked too far into the thesis part of my program, I do have an idea of what I'd like to write about. Here's a link to one of my professors' webpage with further links to thesis projects: http://www.indstate.edu/mary/gradproject.htm

Hopefully that will give you some insight into what's expected.

Specializes in Emergency, Outpatient.

My thesis was a pilot study for a computer program timing nursing tasks. This was for the MSN with a focus in nursing education. It was a year long task but I did learn. The best advice I received was to take it in sections. It was almost 100 pages when complete including appendices.

Ok- so if a FNP program is 2 years and it takes someone up to a year after that to complete their thesis, it really takes 3 years to be awarded your degree???

Specializes in private practice, corporate.

Holy cow, it (thesis) delayed my graduation by at least a year, if not 18 months. Avoid at all costs. Worst experience of my scholastic life.

Specializes in ICU.

My school sort of arranges classes so that your last semester consists only of the thesis and concurrent course that helps you write a good thesis.

It did not delay my graduation a year but it took a year to complete. My thesis was done in addition to my regular classes. I started right after my research, theory, and statistic courses. The very first class that I went to I was advised to start thinking about my thesis topic and start looking for advisors that have similar interests. It was a pain but I have included on my resume "Pilot tested a research instrument for a magnet hospital........." :)

Specializes in ER, critical care.

More and more the thesis is becoming an optional component of the NP program. Rather that do a thesis, I did a research practicum with one of the professors. No muss, no fuss and met the requirements.
