I went to see my advisor the other day, and at the university where I am getting a BSN, Vanderbilt advertises what they are calling a "full scholarship" to graduates of this university to pursue an advanced degree as a pediatric NP or a neonatal NP, in exchange for a two year commitment.

I wonder if anyone is familiar with programs like these and what kind of catches there are?

I have not heard about this. Is it just graduates of certain universities, or is the program open to others?

When I went to , there were only 2 people who received full scholarships and this was in all of their NP programs combined. I don't know anything about the PNP or NNP option. I do know that you will have to have a minimum of 2 years of RN neonatal experience before you can even apply for their NNP program though.

I could have gotten a full ride at Vandy, because I'm a Cherokee Indian. However, I would have had to practice for 2 years on a reservation and that just wasn't an option. So, there's always a catch.

The school is MTSU in Murfreesboro. According to the ad on the bulleting board, it is called a...I forget the name, something like a Jane Allen full scholarship available only to MTSU graduates.

This sounded pretty good for graduate school, even though I'm not really interested in limiting myself to peds. Still, if you could get this I think it would be worth it to start getting interested. I don't know the details. I'm sure a student has to meet other qualifications.

I also wonder about the two year commitment...what if they are not in need of peds NP's when you finish school? Will you be sent out to work the floor?

the christy-houston foundation scholarship will be awarded to five (5) pediatric advanced practice nurses for $35,000 each. to qualify for this scholarship, a student must be a bsn-prepared rn who is a graduate from middle tennessee state university and/or a rutherford county tennessee resident. after graduation the student must complete a two (2) year payback service at vanderbilt’s children’s hospital.

I guess they are assuming that there will be a need for PNP's. You're right, PNP's are very limited and if they want to go back to get their FNP certification, then it will be like starting school all over again! Seriously, the FNP pretty much covers it all, so why not just get that to begin with??

I do qualify for a tribal card, too, I just don't want to be stuck on a reservation.

so cherokee indians can get a full ride to vanderbilt?

is it just cherokee indians or anyone with a CDIB?
