Should NP able to prescribe narcotics? I have debate coming in my classe. I am on "yes" side but I can't think of good retional. I like to know you each side of opinions. I also like to know why some people are againt NP's precribing narcotics. Thanks

As an NP specializing in Palliative Medicine, I could not hope to ease suffering nor effectively manage symptoms without the ability to prescribe narcotics. This is done safely and within the standard of care. I cannot see a reason why an NP should not have this ability.

What type of NP program did you do and how did you get into palliative care? I'm currently applying to masters programs and would eventually like to end up in a palliative care roll. Thanks for sharing.

I am an ANP. My group consists of an MD and another ANP. My recommendation would be to find a palliative care team that you can precept with if you have any flexibility during your clinical rotations. This is what I did and was offered a job when I graduated. My background was in critical care which I feel is essential to inpatient palliative care. You can also explore a post-grad residency if available in your area (Mass Gen has one). There are also a few DNP programs with a focus on palliative care. Hope this helps.
