Anyone in Rural Health Facility or HPSA? I am considering moving to this arena for loan repayment purposes and would like to hear from someone already in it. What's the situation, how are the hours, call, compensation, benes, patient load....etc etc...???

Hey CGFNP:

Very interesting to hear how it's going...I did find your joke about the 6 months amusing! Which state are you finding to be more favorable? What's it looking like for loan repay and salary? Best of Luck to you--I wouldn't want to be on the other end of negotiating with you, you've got it all figured out...now it's just finding someone to recognize your clinical skills and business acumen!

It would be my luck (and, yours) the three pts. the first night would be:

OB who has passed out ..... not in labor.......EDC last week......no s/s obvious hemorrhage...........and, code:eek:

MVA .......... driver of the vechicle ..... semi-quasi head-on collision.... c/o chest px ....... and, code:eek:

2 y/o ......... fever ........ rash .....nuchal rigidity:eek:

You are making me, well.... does the phrase "scared turtle" mean anything??? I guess it's the fear that keeps you honest (and your patients safe).

Thanks for the kind words... but... you actually DO want to be on the other end of negotiating with me. I am creating systems for clinics that will make me a lot of money if I work hard, no doubt. What I need people to realize is if I make a lot of money, they make even more!!!

The clinical skills have to speak for themselves. I can tell them I'm good but the best way to do that is after you've left the patients room hearing them say "that's the best doctor I've ever seen" to the staff will take care of that one.

And for business acumen... LOL okay, okay, I had to go to dictionary.com for that one!!!

Sorry, forgot the other questions. Loan repay shouldn't be an issue as the last 3 years have funded every applicant regardless of HPSA score. Salary and states: I'll have to answer that later this week after I've come to an agreement and signed on, just in case (albeit very slim chance) there are some lurkers reading that will be interviewing against me.

O.K., I will not give you any more fodder to consider.

And, believe me...........there ARE lurkers who do just that.......

Hello CGFNP:

So, have you settled on anything yet? Anxious to hear how the whole thing worked out for you!

Still haven't signed a contract, but I've been in Key West for the last week on vacation, so this will probably happen in the next few days. Negotiations are over, and now it's just paperwork. I'll keep you updated.

Sorry it took so long. I have finally secured the deal. I will be doing primary care in western KS 5 days/week, and sharing ER call with 3 other providers. The pay and benes are great, and it's the type of practicing I want to be doing, so I am stoked.

Negotiations were pretty easy, but would've been better if timed more appropriately. In other words, I'd already negotiated everything out before meeting w/ the CEO and hospital board because they were so far away. In hind sight, I'd rather do that after making a personal appearance. But, I got what I wanted for the most part. It looks to be a well run hospital system with nice facilities and very friendly medical staff/administration.

The NHSC loan repayment program paperwork was pretty time consuming and stressful, as you have to get it right the first time or wait till next year for re application. So, basically, that paperwork is worth $50,000. Needless to say, I looked it over many times after finishing it and was still nervous while licking the envelope.

All in all, I am excited to start and stoked about not having a student loan in 3 yrs. I'm taking a pay cut to go, but when considering the loan repayment and added benefits, it's probably a wash. But, as I expected, I am as busy as ever in my current practice and therefore made over $8,000 in the last two weeks, just to ensure my ulcer doesn't heal any time soon. Oh well... money truly isn't everything. I've learned to find what kind of work you really want to do then try to make the most doing whatever that is. I think it'll make me much happier. I'm putting it to the test right now, so we'll see.... :uhoh3:

Hey, these things take time, cgfnp. It's your life and sounds as if you took your time and did it right.

Great news. Glad you finalized everything and are getting a good deal. And, I know you wanted ED, so I'm happy you will be able to do that.

Good luck in KS. Let us know how you like the area and your job.
