Psych RN wanting to do FNP-- Advice?

Quick background. Out of nursing school I did 1 year peds ICU (PICU). I left after a year and have been working in adolescent psych for over a year now.

I have always been interested in Family NP. Is my psych experience a disadvantage to me applying to a FNP program (Im considering Frontier)? It seems everyone on this forum has considerable ER, ICU, etc experience. I have no desire to go back to ICU or work in the ER, its just not my thing.

I am in a similar situation, but my experience is in school nursing and I am applying for FNP programs.

On my essay, I just stressed the areas of my work that will help me in the program (already used to practicing semi-independently, knowing when to refer, staying calm under pressure, etc.) In your case I can see the psych experience helping a great deal because so many of the medical pts you will see will have psych co-morbidities. Put a positive spin on it and turn a potential limitation into a bonus!
