NPs in geriatrics

Specialties NP

Published

I recently began working in an emotional health unit, and love it. I feel I've finally come home and most likely will change my MSN/NP program focus. I originally thought psychiatric but have come to realize that what I like is the geri patients. I'm hoping to find some gerontology NPs to tell me how their days are.

I'm also looking for some insight: Would I be more marketable as a geri NP with psych experience or a psych NP with geri experience? I live in the Southeast.

Thanks!

From my experience in psych, I would say that the wider range of being a gero NP with psych experience (as opposed to a specialty psych NP subspecializing in gero) would give you a much wider range of opportunities. The population of seniors with (all) health problems is much larger than the population of seniors with psych problems. That's just my opinion, though, and the next poster may say something entirely different ... :)

Thanks -- You're the second person who's suggested that. I appreciate your replies!
