Hello all, I am a new Nurse Practitioner who will be starting a role as a hospitalist nurse practitioner. I will be admitting, helping with discharges and sometimes rounding with physicians. I know there are mixed feelings regarding this role and a new NP. I already took the position and not looking for that kind of feedback. What I am looking for is advice, as in how to be better. I am wondering if there is anything I can do, read, or study before practicing. I like to be prepared. The doctors I will be working with are all so nice and understanding. I have been a nurse and worked with these physicians and other NPs for about 9 years. I feel like I am not leaving my comfort zone but I want to earn their respect and feel knowledgeable. I am NEW! Help!

Always double/triple check admitting orders. Keep a list of the basic orders that every patient should have addressed upon admission (i.e. diet, fever prophylaxis, ambulation, nausea prophylaxis, constipation prophylaxis, DVT prophylaxis, starting home meds, etc...). Likewise for discharges keep a list of everything you need to do (i.e. put a discharge order in, have a med rec completed and signed, etc...). Then create a list of top admitting diagnosis and what specific orders all people admitted with diagnosis should have (i.e. admitted for r/o CVA while be getting a lipid panel, etc...).
