New FNP working in Women's Health. Overwhelmed

Have any FNPs began their careers working in GYN/OB practices?

I recently started my first job as a FNP in a private practice providing GYN/OB care. Needless to say the amount of information I need to know is quite overwhelming for me. There are several MDs and two mid-levels in practice. The MDs are the ones I am training with (pretty much shadowing so far). They have been kind enough to provide me with appropriate resources (great books, etc), but I feel like I will never catch up to that level where I can function independently. I am hoping that will come with time. Pretty nervous about starting to perform certain procedures (IUDs, Nexplanon insertions, etc) since I have not done those.

I am supposed to start seeing about 20 pts per day whenever I do start seeing pts. And to make my goal of about 30 pts per day or more. Again, mental freakout here. :nailbiting:

I guess I don't have a question exactly, but just looking to share perspectives with anyone who's been in this situation. Does it get better?? Or is specialized practice as a New FNP career suicide?

Specializes in peds.

Not an NP but all new things take time. It's good they are providing you with orientation and resources. Ask if they will watch you do a procedure the first time. I'm sure you'll be great don't give up.

I agree, everyone struggles at first. its good that they are providing you with orientation, that means they think that your worth investing for them to take the time to do that. You just have to do your part as far as trying to best you can to learn everything. When I was a new grad, I read 2-3 hours every night for 6-8 months after work to try and learn about family practice despite how tired I was, which I think what every new grad should be doing.
