I'll be happy to answer some of them later, but have to run right now.

Good luck!

Ok, I'm back. :)

To begin with, have you chosen any online programs that interest you? Which direction are you hoping to go? I'm thinking that ANP = Adult Nurse Practitioner. My school, Indiana State University, offers online programs, but seem to have dropped their ANP degree. http://www.indstate.edu/distance/nursing-masters.html I've had an excellent experience thus far. It's challenging, but worth it! If you would like specific information on this school I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.

As for the essay... each school will typically offer suggestions as to what they are looking for in your personal statement. Whatever you choose, be honest about your goals and interest in the field. My statement focused on telling a story about how I became a nurse and why my passion drove me to the FNP education. As far as I can tell, they are looking for professionalism, intellect, ability to write, and potential for success since a well-written essay will present your skills in a direct manner. Your statement will be a reflection and representation of you, so make sure it's succinct and the best work you can offer. Have many people review it with honesty.

Best of luck to you!

I agree with the previous post: most schools will give you an idea of what they are looking for, e.g. what are your career goals/how will this degree help you achieve them, etc.

I know someone who works in the nursing admissions office- a big mistake that people make is they don't address what the program ask for in the essay- if they ask for specific information, include it!

My application asked why I wanted to be a nurse, what personal attributes I felt I had to offer and why field I wanted to work in and I why. I specifically and clearly addressed each of these.

Think long and hard before you write your essay ("superficial" essays blend together- you want to make yourself stand out and show you really want to be in the program and belong there) and then have someone else read it to catch mistakes you might have missed or odd wording. Spelling errors make a bad impression and could suggest you aren't taken the process seriously...

Make the essay personal- if you don't interview for the program this is one of the few opportunities the selection committee has to get to know you.

If you have any bad grades, don't mention them unless you have a really good reason- like you had a major life changing experience at that time-take responsibility and talk about how you have grown from that experience- don't blame the experience or teacher for you getting a bad grade... make sure you don't ramble and stick to the page limits. Include only relevant info.... those were some other problems people tended to make.... good luck! Don't freak when you get a letter from the admissions office and it's sitting there unopened!
