dilemma for FNP

I passed my FNP exam recently and am in search of a job but i have a dilemma. My husband has one more semester in school before he finishes his Bachelors at Univ. of alabama and he needs to finish before aug 09 so he doesnt have to take any other classes(right now he is scheduled for 3 so only one semester and he has to do it at Univ of alabama)-our problem is we have our house on the market and for him to go to ala and do those classes w/o a job and me to stay in maryland we could not pay the bills so he had suggested me to get a travel job in alabama so i could have all my expenses paid and we could have housing and we could take the money i make and pay the mortgage on our house-but my dilemma is that i finished FNP school and want to get a job as a FNP not a RN travel nurse. Although it would only be for a couple of months I have hard time waiting till May 09 to get a job as a NP-that is one year after I graduated- Any suggestions on what to do? our other option is to wait it out our house may not sell for years and he would have to do about 3 semesters to get everything done

I don't know of any agencies that will hire a NP without experience.

Why not contact a travel agency and ask to work as an NP? Or one of those recruitment firms-they sometimes fill temporary positions for NPs, I recently saw one on indeed.com to cover for an NP on maternaty leave for a few months. I would get your resume out to the agencies and recruitment firms, check the local classifides and find a job as an NP. I would not want to wait a year before working as an NP either. From what I have seen (constantly checking the job market) is NP jobs seem to be almost as diverse as RN jobs, per diem, temp, travel, agency, home care, etc...

I'm actually planning on taking a leave of absence from my current job when I graduate with my NNP, so I can do a few RN NICU travel assignments and see the country before returning to work as an NNP. I can maintain my seniority then....

i just got my FNP and have a new job, but also am thinking of possibly taking a break and doing travel nursing for awhile. If i could make close to the same amount PLUS have housing and utilities paid for, i could really pay off some loans..

I too am worried how that might be seen in the future trying to get work as a FNP.

Also it is pretty easy now to travel with a RN license, but its a whole other big deal to get licensed as an APN in another state.

Has anybody done this?

to the above 1st post.

i don't think taking a travel job and waiting to start is a bad idea, you could do that and if you only work 3days/week you could try to pick up a part time APN job. Sometimes it takes 3-6 months just to get all the paperwork/credentialling done for an APN job anyways, and you could be working as a RN in the meantime.

You do certainly seem to have a dilema there don't you.

If we looked at it logically. Your husband is the "rate limiting factor". He has to go to T-town to finish his degree. He has no choice. So to Alabama he must go. The next question is where will you live once he is done. AL (I hope not, bad NP laws here), MD, etc. If you will be living in Maryland you may want to keep the house, rent it out for a year so that you can still "pay the mortgage". If not sell the house as quickly as possible.

If you will be living and moving to AL....well.....first I'm sorry. :) Been here since 95 and can't wait to leave. Second.....buy a house here and begin looking for a FNP job here. They use NP's extensively at UAB University Hospital in the Stepdown and certain ICU's.

If you are not going to live here OR in MD. Then you may want to take a travel job in the city that you will be moving too once hubby graduates. Start getting contacts there and putting your name out to the various MD's, Hospitals, NP practices, etc. Find a house, etc

There is also the take a travel job. You could do that as a break before you go work as a FNP. But if your like me I'm sure I won't be able to wait to work as a NP and get out of bedside nursing. But just as your husband supported you while you were in school, its important to suppport your husband now while hes finishing up school. But think of it, once hes done....he owes you so you could use for leverage....Honey, I want to go here because they have great NP laws!!!
