A day in the life of a NP

Hi everyone. I'm currently a nursing student, part of the reason I am going into nursing is that the job offers so many options, one of them being becoming a nurse practitioner. I'm just interested in what a day in your job consists of. I don't know much about this position, other than the capability of writing prescriptions and having a private practice, and I would like to know more.

There are many different NP specialties and your day will look very different depending on work setting. But just for fun, this is what a typical day is for me. I work in pediatric pulmonolgy seeing mainly asthma and allergy patients, and I see about 25 pts per day.

---for new patients, a complete history and physical exam, tailored to the patient's chief complaint.

---decide based on presentation the diagnosis and level of ashtma severity, and initiate treatment accordingly

---consider differential diagnoses and order other diagnostic tests if indicated. For example when babies present with cough/wheeze we usually order an upper GI series to r/o structural defects.

---provide teaching on appropriate use of meds, avoidance of triggers etc.

---We do allergy testing and PFT's in the office. I prep them for the tests, review the results, explain them to the pt and discuss treatment options.

---For follow up patients I monitor their symptoms and adherence to treatment and decide if we need to step up or down treatment.
