credentialing

I am a new grad NP, and I am in a bit of a mess. I appreciate your help, and hope that you will reserve your judgment and refrain from beating me up.

I graduated in May. Went out and celebrated. My husband was supposed to come pick me up afterward and drive me home. Long story short, I wasn't able to get a hold of him, and made the BIGGEST mistake of my life. I got in the car and I drove. I got a DUI that night (just a day after graduating). I know that people will say that I must be an alcoholic, and that i could have killed someone. Trust me, I have beat myself up more than any of you can even imagine. I know better. It was idiotic beyond comprehension. I made a TERRIBLE mistake. I am paying for it dearly.

I have finally landed my dream job, and am getting ready to start the credentialing process at the hospital. I am on probation for one year. Obviously, I am concerned about getting credentialed. If anyone has any advice (other than to bash me), I'd really and truly appreciate it. I know I made a mistake. I am hoping I didn't ruin my whole life.

Please IM me if you don't want to comment on here. I really really could use some advice.

I don't remember seeing a question regarding DUI's in the credentialing packets I've filled out so far but be aware that Credentialing Boards (as well as HR) run background checks through law enforcement entities. More than likely, your DUI and subsequent probation will show up in the report. I have no experience in this but interestingly I found that some credentialing boards specifically look for DUI's in physician staff members based on this announcement from Stanford: link. This article from the California Society of Anesthesiologists: link also warns physicians to be mindful of unexpected past histories that can make credentialing problematic. I imagine cases will be dealt with on an individual basis and hopefully, the board that reviews your application will be kind and give you a chance.

Also, be on the look out regarding how your state BON deals with DUI's. There are states where the rules are quite unforgiving.

Do you have an update on this? Were you able to get credentialed? What about
