Changing NP certification

HI,

I am new to the site and new to advanced practice nursing so I had a question that I thought someone might be able to help me with. What is the process for getting another NP certification. I am finishing up my FNP but am interested in Mental Health NP and in the future may look to move into that field. Anybody know the process?

You could obtain a post-masters PMHNP cert. There are likely several programs available that you can look into.

Specializes in Correctional Nursing; MSN student.

Once you have your MSN you can add a post cert. in psych or any other area of interest.

Just keep in mind that to maintain both certifications you'll need to maintain hours in both populations/specialties. I'm not sure how easy or difficult it is to have hours count towards both FNP and Psych, so you should check with the certifying board. For Psych, I think that means ANCC only (AANP doesn't offer Psych).

I had professors that eventually let one certification lapse due to both renewal fees and maintenance of hours.
