California furnishing number

I have a question for NPs in California... Do you have to wait to get your NP license to apply for a furnishing number? Or can it be simultaneous? I have heard a couple things and looking at the California nursing website just confused me more. It seems like you need a license because the form asks for an NP license number, but on the off chance that you don't, I'd like to get my furnishing number ASAP!

Any info is greatly appreciated :)

I got my NPF after my NP lic# and DEA. I was informed to wait until after you have your DEA sched 2 certificate in CA to apply for your NPF because then your NPF has sched 2-5 privileges. If you get your NPF then your DEA after you have to submit a request for expanded prescription rights which can take time. You need your NP license to apply for DEA. You need your DEA to show sched 2 on NPF.

Therefore, gets your NP license first, then DEA, when DEA is confirmed get your NPF.

I'm sure it can be done a different way though.

I got my furnishing and NP license together. I was told that you have to be working under a physician in order to get a DEA number but am not sure--that would make waiting for get your furnishing difficult. Also, the DEA is expensive and you might want to see if you could get an employer to cover it.

And I LOVE your name OP...pro-Oxford comma all the way!!!

You should be able to send applications for both NP and NPF. In order to prescribe schedule II and above in California, you have to also send a copy of your DEA certificate and proof of having completed a BRN-approved CME on controlled substances. CANP (the state NP association) offers a mail-in CME at a discounted rate to members. I don't remember if the DEA application requires a name for a collaborating physician. Once you receive the privilege to furnish schedule drugs, your NPF will be updated accordingly to reflect the change.

Nope, I submitted both forms at the same time -- I believe the # itself is the same for both anyway. =)

thank you so much everybody!!

Hahaha thank you @Pachinko! Whenever I see a list without one, it feels VERY WRONG! Lol
