Any Neonatal Nurse Practitioners

Hello,

I was just curious to know were any neonatal NPS pleased with their role in the NICU. It would also be helpful to know where you received your training. I am just a nursing student but I hope to someday become a Neonatal nurse practitioner and it seems that the numbers of programs for training are limited.

There aren't too many NNP's here on this board... I'm getting ready to start my NNP program at Columbia University next month. There are a variety of online and classroom based programs available. I personally couldn't handle an online class, so I moved myself 800 miles to the NYC area, I'm commuting 1.5 hours each way to work at one of the leading hospitals in NYC. I am confident it will be worth it. NNP's are one area that allows maximal time at the bedside, not only just writing orders, but being able to transport infants, perform invasive procedures, etc. I've seen many NNP's satisfied with their job. I guess I'll find out for myself in a few years!

What exactly is in the NNP's scope of practice? Do all of them attend deliveries, take call, and write orders? I'm interested, but a little unfamiliar. Also, what do you need to get accepted into a program?

Steve, how long is your program going to take to complete and were you required to have work experience in the NICU prior to applying?

I found a program near where I live and I just wanted a comparison.

2 years of NICU experience is required for the certification exam, so all programs will require it.
