Afrin Re-Use - How many days?

Specialties NP Nursing Q/A

I know that the nasal spray medication called Afrin (oxymetazoline) should not be used for more than 3 days. What I don't know is how long can the patient wait until they are able to use it again? Can they use it again after a week, or a month? I have tried looking up this information in multiple scholarly and non-scholarly sources, but was unsuccessful.

I've also heard from a few ENTs that if you take it in conjunction with a nasal steroid, you don't get rhinitis medicamentosa, but I haven't seen anything published to that effect.

Extant data says three days. That is based on animal models though.

It's only minimally effective anyways.
