Do you ask questions in the middle of shift report?

Nurses Relations

Just wondering, do you have to wait till the 23rd. patient before asking a question on pt.#4?

My all time favorite report...(and I forget where I first heard this).... "In bed, been fed, got meds, nothin' red, none dead, 'nuf said" :)

Specializes in DOU.
@Wooh: I work in CCU. I don't have time to look up stuff that should be said in report. That is what report is for.

I agree that too many nurses give insignificant info during report, and I also want to know the results of relevant testing, assuming they are available. The WORST, though, is when the previous nurses doesn't even know who the consulting doctors are, or what procedures are still pending!

I get a lot of really crappy reports. I blame the stupid computerized SBARs a lot of the nurses are using now.

I'm using it. My little issue with late punchouts is solved! :)

If you don't have time to look it up because you're in CCU, how is it the offgoing nurse has time to look it up, since I'd assume the offgoing nurse also works in CCU?

Report is to get the critical information. Not every last detail. Report isn't a quiz show. Unless you're prepared to hand over some fabulous prizes, don't be a quiz show host.

:yeah:

I really like both these comments . . "Report isn't a quiz show" and "In bed, been fed, got meds, nothin' red, none dead, 'nuf said".

At the end of my 12 hour shift (3 a.m. to 3 p.m.) I was exhausted. If you interrupt me as I get rolling . . . . you might have to sit there for awhile as I try to get back on track. PLUS . . .that question you asked might just be coming up in my report and you didn't let me get to it.

I think that is what frustrates me when I get interrupted . . . . . that info is coming up, let me get there.

When I'm finished, if I didn't answer the question you've got, ask me then.

:)
