New Grad Jobs in Charlotte

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Is anyone else having a hard time finding a job as a new grad in Charlotte? I just moved to the area in June, but began applying in December of last year. I graduated this past May and am licensed in NC. I have had no luck whatsoever finding a job. From what I've heard, there are a lot of new grads in the area and not many positions. Anyone else having trouble? Any ideas/suggestions? I've tried home health, but at least 1 year of experience is required (same with most temp agencies). Help!

That is interesting. There must still be some favoritism being shown, perhaps for "old times' sake." ...

I definitely think that is what it is. The only other thing I can think of is, the recruiter thinks it sounds more permanent to say it that way so there are no "what ifs". For instance, if she said, "Sorry but there aren't enough jobs right now so you weren't chosen at this time," then she might have to suffer through months of voicemails from proactive new grads waiting for a new spot to open up. :D (Mom, are we there yet?? Are we there yet? Mom, mommy, mommy, momma, MOM) :lol2:

Or maybe she just thinks it sounds nicer?

Either way, message received. :crying2:

I received the same call from a Presby recruiter in December, however, my interpretation of the message was quite different. The recruiter simply stated that their policy is to hire "internally" first and IF there are positions still available, they will conduct interviews with external candidates. Internal- meaning those affiliated/currently employed with Presby (i.e. NAs, Techs, Clerks, LPN/LVNs, etc.). The recuiter made sure to point out that they had an abundance of "internal candidates"... however, she stated they may interview a few external candidates as well. I'm not sure if this is what the recuiter told you or if this is what she meant. It seems to make more sense as most hospitals have an obligation to interview current employees first. Atleast, this is how it's done at the hospital I worked at during nursing school in MI. Hope this helps! :)

Hmm now I'm second guessing what I heard. I wish I still had the voicemail that she left initially. Its very possible she said "our own candidates" and my mind went with queens. I think had she used the word internal I probably wouldn't have been thrown off. But then again she may have still said program cause for some reason that stuck in my mind. It was about 4 weeks ago so I can't remember anymore. I'm going to assume though that despite the wording, your interpretation was more accurate!

She probably said "our own new grads" meaning the new grads working there already! It was the morning of my graduation when she called so mind wasn't exactly focused on that but the snow storm that may have canceled graduation!

Well, I'm also not a local, so Queens or Presby's SON means nothing to me. My knowledge of any of the nursing schools in NC is zilch... so I could have misunderstood as well. She definitely said internal and external... so I just attributed that to how it is in MI.

I swear, what does Presby SON vs. Queens SON have to do with trying to find a job?? If they are not hiring anyone then who gives a rats azz? So off topic. Anyone have anything REAL to contribute to finding a job in this area?

I don't know either what the talk about different Schools of Nursing have to do with getting a job.

If you can't find a job in Charlotte, try Gastonia:

Maybe going to interviews with a nicer demeanor than the above comment may be a good place to start.

Hmm... well, I just passed the boards and even THAT doesn't seem to matter when it comes to hiring. I keep getting the same response, and that is, recruiters are NOW focused ONLY on hiring May 2010 graduates (I graduated in Dec). Not exactly sure why a recruiter would pass up a licensed new grad over an unlicensed 'future' new grad?! I hope that the summer months will provide a different response, before they start focusing ONLY on Dec 2010 graduates. It's very discouraging knowing that I spent five long years in school and almost $50k in loans for... nothing?!?! I know that persistance is the key and my only option at this point; as well as getting a job outside of nursing for the time being.

Grads jobs in the Triangle are just as bad. I have been employed for the past 10 years at a hospital. The nursing employment office told me that the applicants were sorted based on GPA and nursing assistant experience. My application got pushed to the bottom of the pile out of about 500 applicants. WHAT A SHAME!!!! I have applied to about 5 more hospitals and most are saying the same thing-- we have recieved over a thousand applications and we just don't have enough positions to fill them all. Well everyone wants a nurse with experience, but what about the new grads.. Very discouraging. I just have to keep in mind what God has for me will be for me. I know that job is out there, but God is putting me through a test to get there.

It is sad to say that it is still like that in Charlotte. I am a new graduate nurse and I sat down and applied to 41 jobs online for CMC (all of which said experience preferred but not required, or had NO response to and experience needed). The really depressing part is that within 2 hours of my applying to ALL those positions they all said Application filed, not hired. How to the know enough about you to just say no within minutes of recieving your application? One of the draws to nursing for me was that we were supposed to be in high demand. Where is the demand? Because I surely don't see it. In our class alone we had 36 new grads so where are we all going to go? Some of the ones who had a job already just got premoted up the ladder but what about the ones who didn't. Do we just get left out? How are we ever going to get the years of experience if we are not given a chance!!!

I moved to NC just his April. Thankfully, I had 2 years of RN experience behind me. I would say that I applied for around 15 CMC jobs and never even received an interview. They also took forever updating the application to "not hired."

I would say for you to focus on Presbyterian and its affiliates and also Gaston Memorial. I actually ended up with 2 interviews at Presbyterian and one at Gaston. I was offered one and took it without looking back. My neighbor searched around for a long time as a new grad and eventually was hired at Forsyth. We are both making over 30 mile commutes each way. However, the ticket is just to get hired within an organization. It is much easier to then move about. Anyway, good luck.
