New Grad Jobs in Charlotte

Is anyone else having a hard time finding a job as a new grad in Charlotte? I just moved to the area in June, but began applying in December of last year. I graduated this past May and am licensed in NC. I have had no luck whatsoever finding a job. From what I've heard, there are a lot of new grads in the area and not many positions. Anyone else having trouble? Any ideas/suggestions? I've tried home health, but at least 1 year of experience is required (same with most temp agencies). Help!

The really depressing part is that within 2 hours of my applying to ALL those positions they all said Application filed, not hired. The HR person probably saw that you applied for 41 positions at one time and rejected you outright because a serious candidate would only apply for a few focused positions.

One of the draws to nursing for me was that we were supposed to be in high demand. Where is the demand? Because I surely don't see it.:confused: In our class alone we had 36 new grads so where are we all going to go? Some of the ones who had a job already just got promoted up the ladder but what about the ones who didn't. Do we just get left out? How are we ever going to get the years of experience if we are not given a chance!!!:madface:

The "High" Demand days are gone.

There are so many experienced nurses coming to the area that new grads don't really have a chance. My friend that recently got hired at CMC told me that 1/2 of the new nurses were from out of state and the newly hired nurses had an average of 8 years of experience. This makes it impossible for new grads to get hired.

It's bad in most places in NC right now. I just got hired in a Greensboro hospital with a whole bunch of 2010 New Grads and they even said they felt lucky to be chosen because many of their classmates are still looking. Remember too that most deadlines for New Grad programs have long ago expired and their programs are now full.

Last year when I graduated I tried getting into many hospitals here (I had moved here from Iowa) and they kept saying the same thing "we can't even hire are own, how can we look at you?" I'm assuming they meant that they couldn't even hire they own workers like CNAs, LPNs, etc...who have since graduated from RN programs and have their degree but the hospital doesn't have anything for them.

It's even bad for experienced nurses. I had orientation along with 2 nurses with 20-30 years of experience but one only got hired PRN because they hired New Grads for most of their full-time positions. The other had to take a refresher course at the hospital first (that SHE pays for) because she hasn't worked in an acute care setting in the last 5 years (even though she had once worked as an ICU nurse). They won't even guarantee her a job when she's done!

It's just a bad time to get hired right now. If you don't have a BSN or MSN degree, I suggest getting more education first and hopefully by the time you graduate things will have improved!

You were probably told "No" so quickly because you are a new grad and you applied for those positions. CMC (and most of the area hospitals) require you to apply specifically as a new grad. If you go on their website you can hunt around the career search page and find a link that says "New Nurse Graduates" and you apply to a job position that is posted as "New Grad RN." You don't actually apply to a unit like you did in your post. All of the hospitals I looked at during my job hunt were done like this. The hiring process for new grads are done totally different from other RN positions.

My job hunt was a little difficult as well, but thankfully I found a position. Right now the hiring comes down to who you know and how you're affiliated with the hospital. If you're a current employee of a hospital, you have a great chance of getting a job there. Otherwise, you better start making friends with hiring managers during clinicals and internships. You really do have to make connections and make them work for you. Current employees made recommendations to the hiring manager that gave me an interview. I think it was many of those employees that helped persuade the hiring manager to hire me.
