Duke ABSN 2012

U.S.A. North Carolina

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if there was anyone out there applying to Duke's ABSN program for the spring or fall class in 2012. I'm going to apply, but can't decide if I should apply for the spring or the fall. If I apply for the Spring class- I will still have 3 prereqs to finish (micro, soc, and stat) which I can finish before the program starts. Is it crazy to apply to Duke with 3 outstanding prereqs? Should I wait until December and apply for Fall 2012 instead? At that time I will be currently taking the last of the prereqs. Any advice would be helpful! Especially if there's anyone who has gotten into Duke with 3 prereqs to go...

Everything I've read on old threads implies that the personal statement is HUGE. I agree, I think they're looking at candidates holistically rather than as numbers on paper. That's encouraging for me, since my undergrad GPA isn't stellar. Speaking of which, do any of you all know whether courses from a school other than the one you graduated from will be calculated into GPA? I transferred to ODU with a 4.0, where I earned a 3.27 in courses there, and I've got a 4.0 in all my prereqs. Do you think they look at the total sum of all of these? Just curious. Something I thought about yesterday. :)

I'm not sure on what they calculate your undergrad GPA on...

I have a question...who are you guys having do your letters of recommendation? I feel silly asking professors whom I'm only had one class with to write one...but maybe that's the norm?

Thanks,

Michelle

Hi..I'll be attending Duke's ABSN program for Fall 2012..it's great to know so soon ahead of time and not have to worry about where I'll be going after graduation. I was accepted to a special program that kicks off this summer - there, we'll be networking, learning the nursing school, facilities, and the campus, attending nursing lectures and seminars, and getting a jump-start on our degree credit by taking an introductory nursing course. I think 10 of us were accepted to the program. I'm a rising college senior, so I'll graduate May 2012 and jump right into the ABSN in the fall, provided I receive sufficient grades in my remaining pre-reqs of course.

I'm not sure what determined our acceptances to this program (the summer program + guaranteed admission for the ABSN portion) but we went through a regular application process..it was just a lot faster than the regular I suppose. My GPA was strong I guess, but I honestly believe my personal statement and letters of recommendation were what did it. I did a phone interview, which I thought was a little rocky, but I guess it didn't go too bad.

I think one of the things that made me a strong applicant was the fact that I had shadowed nurses, doctors (i was originally planning for med skool), even lawyers, but after so much professional exposure, my interests came back to nursing. They saw that I had an idea of what I was getting myself into and wasn't basing my decision to enter nursing from say..some nurse I had seen on tv...which sadly many people do. Also, one of the goals of the program to which I was accepted is to harness nurse LEADERS..I therefore made it clear in my interview and personal statement that my ultimate goal was to practice nurse anesthesia and earn a DNP. Overall, I think they want to know that you have a passion for the field and that you have dreams of not only serving others but cultivating YOURSELF socially and intellectually.

Hey guys,

So I am aiming at upping my application for Spring 2012, instead of fall! So that means I'm taking Statistics and physiology this summer and then sociology, anatomy and micro in the fall. It's gonna be tough but I can do it.

Have you guys decided who your letters of recommendation will be from? I have at least 2 past employers/supervisors who can do one but am wondering if the third should be from a teacher or someone in healthcare, like who supervised me in my CNA course.

Also, do you know how long after the July 1st submittal deadline we might find out about interviews?

Duke always moves pretty quickly on admissions. I believe the fall deadline was 12/1 and interview notifications were sent out 12/17. I am hoping we will know by 7/15, but it may not be until the following week.

Hey guys,

Just checking in to see how those apps are coming along :) I haven't submitted yet...probably after my GRE that I'm due to take next Friday..ugh...cramming in that vocabulary!

Let me know how your GRE goes! I was so incredibly-crazy-absurdly busy with classes and volunteering and work that studying for mine was pushed waaaay to the side and I never actually got any studying done. I went in cold and came out with an 1110; I still don't know for sure about my writing score, but I felt that was definitely the strongest part of my test. I hope it's good enough to be competitive, but I'm feeling a little anxious. If I don't get in this round I'll retake it in the fall, I suppose. :)

How's everything else going for you? I'm finally finished with classes so I'm planning to spend the next few days hammering out the essay. I have 2 letters of rec from my employer (I work for a wilderness therapy company), one from the nurse manager at the clinic where I volunteer, and one from my A&P professor. Getting really excited to submit everything and play the waiting game!

Hello All,

I finished my application last week, submitted in on Friday. Duke received my transcripts on Monday and now my application reads "complete" as of 6/6/11 at 2:52 PM to be very specific. I'm currently playing the waiting game and will update if I hear anything or see anything different with my online application.

My app is in but I'm just waiting on two references to submit. Waiting game for me too.

I'm still working on my personal statement! GRE this Friday! Ugh!

So I've got one reference that I'm still waiting on... Did anyone put in more than the 3 references/ recommenders in case one doesn't come through?

carshell - I didn't but if I had to do it all over again, I might have. I had a horrible time getting the references in for completely understandable reasons, but still frustrating for me. If you have another that you can easily ask that is just as good as the others, I might consider it.

Thanks Oaktown!

I'm going to add one more recommenders in case one falls through.

I talked to "her" at duke and she said they just use the first 3 recommendations they get.

I wonder how many are applying for spring?

And when do classes actually start??
