NCP Interview and Physical
Oaktown, the recruiter I spoke with was a REALLY nice man; however, he didn't seem super informed about what was going on, to be honest. I mentioned that I'd read about the in-school stipend (I'd read about it on the Army website) and he initially told me that was inaccurate. He looked it up and discovered that I was correct though. Also, he asked me to email him with my contact information and said he'd get back to me within the day; that was yesterday morning and I haven't heard anything from him since. I know he's probably very busy, but taking this into consideration and adding in the new knowledge that FY2013 might not even be open, I'm getting a little nervous. Any recommendations?

NCP Interview and Physical
Is FY2013 closed for both branches? I'm set to graduate in August 2013 also and I'm only just beginning the process... What a wrench to throw in there right off the bat! My recruiter didn't mention anything about it being closed when we spoke yesterday.

agh, sorry for the delay in responding, shauna! for some reason i didn't get an update for the thread like i normally do. anyway! i'll be living in SE -- kinda nestled in between woodstock and sellwood. if you are (or anyone else is) in that remote area and would like a carpool buddy, let me know. at some point i think i might to try to be a full time bike commuter since i'll be living right near the springwater corridor, buuuuut i also realize that i might be overextending myself. especially when its cold and rainy later on in the year. we'll see how it goes. :) i'm in the PA block of classes; anyone else?

Military Nursing Questions Answered
Thanks, navyman. :) For anyone else who is browsing this board for info, here's what I've found out from some very helpful AF and Army healthcare recruiters in the past couple of days: The Army and Navy both offer programs for students who are currently in the process of earning their BSNs. I can't speak to the specifics of the Navy program, but for the Army, there is a $5k bonus upon acceptance to the program, a $1k stipend each month the student is enrolled full time in his/her program, and another $5k bonus at graduation. (I believe that the Navy's program is similar, but don't quote me.) After passing boards, the student will head to BOLC and active duty. The AF, however, doesn't have a program of this sort. They do offer a scholarship for nursing students who are also in AFROTC; however, if you have a previous bachelors -- like me -- then you won't be eligible for AFROTC. Bummer. Thanks again to everyone on the thread for their helpful info so far! -Michelle

Military Nursing Questions Answered
this thread is amazing. thank you so much for all the info! i hold a bs in sociology and have been accepted into an accelerated bsn program, beginning in june of this year. it's a small private school, and i'm worried about how i'm going to cover the expense. i like the idea of taking care of those individuals who take care of us, so nursing in the military seems like it might be a great way to meet my financial needs while doing fulfilling work. does anyone know what sort of benefits i might be eligible to receive as a student? since i already hold a bs, would this change my application status at all and/or potential benefits? how long does the process typically take, from application to acceptance into the service and then disbursement of benefits? i'm open to the possibility of working in any branch. i'm 28 (i'll be 29 in july), and my program will end in august of 2013. thus, i'll be 30 when i could be commissioned. is this within the age limitations? also, my school is very small and does not have any rotc programs, though they do have a cooperative agreement with an afrotc program another school in portland. thanks! michelle

nope, no accelerated program at UP. i thought about an entry level masters, but i don't want to choose a specialty until i've spent some time actually working as a nurse. i have about eleventybillion areas that i'm interested in, and it would be too hard to pick one now and worry later if i should've picked something else. i envy people who can make that kind of decision! it would sure save me a lot of time... and debt. :)

got my acceptance letter over the weekend!! i was also accepted at UP's traditional BSN, but i'm waiting to hear whether or not i got accepted as a providence scholar (otherwise, i definitely can't rationalize their astronomical tuition). that'll be the deciding factor for me -- which school ends up being more affordable. decisions, decisions. congrats, everyone! looking forward to maybe meeting some of you soon! :) -michelle

hey, ryan! i applied to UP as well. do you happen to know when they send out decisions? on the admissions faq page it says that it usually takes them about 3-4 weeks to process transfer applications, but i'm curious as to whether that applies to the nursing program as well. best of luck to you too! :) michelle

I'm originally from TN, but I live in Bend, OR now. I'm applying to another nursing program in pdx and also a MSW program (my bachelors is in sociology). Good luck! Maybe we'll be classmates come June. :)
