Didn't realize there was an NICU discussion forum on this website. =) I just started my core nursing classes for my BSN and my goal is to be an NICU nurse. Why?

My kids were born weighing 1 lb. 8 oz. and 2 lb. 2 oz. They were born 3 years apart (severe pre-eclampsia). Surgeries they had included PDA ligation, double bilateral inguinal hernia repair, hydrocele repair, meconium ileus repair, and 5 surgeries for hydrocephus (reservoir, shunt placement/revisions) and ~whew~ finally an ETV (Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy) which allowed my son to have his shunt removed.

Sure is a lot for one mom to go through but I do believe we all have experiences for one reason or another. I will never forget those nurses in the NICU and the relationships I developed with them (they spent 6 months combined in NICU).

So here I am working my way up to being an NICU nurse myself! =) It will be awesome to get in there and give back some of what was given to me.

p.s. Oh, my kids are now 11 and 8 and doing awesome. NO residual problems from their prematurity...not even glasses. Not a single issue. How lucky I am!

Welcome and congrats on your healthy kiddos. I am a long time lurker and pre-nursing student working my way towards NICU. I don't have any exp w/ it but I have been drawn to it for years. My munchkins were big and late, they're 2 and 7 now...so I'm taking the school thing very s-l-o-w-l-y! Welcome again :)
