What brands/type of milk do you have in your units?

Specialties NICU

I appreciate things may be a little different in the US. Over here in the UK we use cow and gate 1st milk, aptamil and SMA.

Is anyone familiar with SMA High Energy and Infatrini milk at all? Are they very similar to each other. Just looking for information.

Here in Canada, formula wise we use Similac (Advance for term babes, SSC 24 or 20 for preemies). We fortify our milk with Similar Human Milk Fortifier. Haven't heard of the ones you mentioned.

We fortify breast milk with either similac HMF or prolacta. Our go-to formula is enfamil, or neocate for gut kiddos. Fortunately getting away from using stinky pregestimil!

The brands, "Enfamil" and "Simlac" are the most popular formulas in the US, although there are many others including "Good Start" and some store brands. They are essentially the same composition and each hospital generally has a contract with a formula to use a certain brand of formula, although we tell parents that they can choose which brand at home.

Each of those brands also has elemental formulas that are broken down for the short gut kids, like Neocate and Elecare. There are some others that are less broken down (semi-elemental) like Pregestimil and Alimentum. And then there are formulas for the renal kids, called "PM 60/40." And the preemie formulas are another animal. Overall there are dozens of formulas for various reasons, but these are some the main ones. I do find it particularly amusing that one of the organic brands also has orificenic found in its milk. Sounds about as oxymoronic as they get...

When I went grocery shopping in the UK a couple of years ago (my DH is English and I was getting my nursing license over there), I saw some of those brands that you mentioned, tinkerbell, but didn't see any North American products.

I'm curious how regulated formula is over there- over here there are some very shady practices. There is a product from Simlac called "Simlac for Supplementation," for breastfeeding moms. It's a complete gimmick. It is the same exact formula as the regular product, but just with a different label. As though there is a superior formula for a mom who is supplementing her breastmilk. What will they think of next? *rolls eyes*

Similac (Neosure, SimSensitive, Alimentum, Special Care Formula insert-calories-here, and Similac Human Milk Fortifier) is our go-to, but we do stock Enfamil for parent request
