Non-Midwife Nurse working in NICU

Specialties NICU

Published

Hi, all

I've got a job offer in working in a NICU. I felt excited as well as nervous because i don't have experience in the area. I actually come from a background of adult intensive care nursing. I will also undertake the NICU course next year.

Any advices?

Also what is your opinion of non-midwifes working in NICU? Will i get disadvantagedof not being a midwife.?

Should i undertake a midwife course after finishing my NICU course?

In fact, i'm male as well.

Specializes in NICU.

Hi, Mady!

I'm sorry that I can't personally be of much help- I live and work in the U.S. and none of our staff are (or are required to be) midwives. In fact, I'm not really understanding what the purpose of that would be...? You're going to be working with the baby after it's delivered, not helping to birth it...? Perhaps you should also post this in the Australasian Discussion Forum! I'm sure you'd get more applicable answers from those who actually work in Australia; I don't know how many of the posters in this particular forum live in countries other than the U.S. The link to that forum is: https://allnurses.com/f123 . Good luck with your questions! :)

Hi mady

I live in Iceland and here we dont have to be midwifes to become Nicu nurses...as a matter of fact only 3 nurses in my nicu are midwifes.

I think this works out just fine.

We had a male nurse in the nicu a few years ago and his only problems were related to breast feeding. The mothers were not quite handeling him assisting them.

I think it is a great plus to have bacground in adult ICU and much more important than the midwife thing.

Good luck.
