Hello!

I'm a new grad which I received my licensed in March 2014.. I have landed two offers in NICU and another in Med Surg/Tele unit.. Please can you help me decide which route to pick.. Why do you like NICU and/or med Surg??..how is you experience so far? Do you have any regrets on picking either one?..Im still deciding to go to masters on FNP program or CRNA.. I have so much to figured out.. Thank you so much for any input!.. God bless;)

This is only a one persons opinion. Seeing that you want to continue your education and possibly be a FNP, go for the NICU. My wife attained her BSN-RN degree and works in ICU, she also a student at a University to be a FNP. She loves that she works in ICU because the knowledge learned in ICU help build a good foundation even though FNP is so different then a ICU Nurse. She gets floated a lot to a med surg unit and she came to the conclusion she at a better advantage in ICU. Another thing to consider is NICU has a great value if want to do travel nursing.

Specializes in Telemetry, OB, NICU.

What do you want to do? Where do you want to work? NICU and Med-surg are completely different areas. You must be toward either one of those. I don't believe one can apply to both positions and feel equal about both of them, unless you really don't care but want the paycheck. I think you just need to listen to yourself.

My heart is set in NICU all this time..thank you so much for your help:)

I think you have answered your question.

Have you thought about NNP? Their scope of practice is increasing and now includes infants up to the age of 2 years. They are also increasingly being used in areas outside of the NICU. If you opt for the FNP route I think NICU experience will be helpful.

I do know of two CRNAs that have an NICU background, so it can be done. If you lean towards CRNA you might want to contact programs in your area, or those you think you might apply to, and discuss their entry requirements.

Good luck in whichever position you choose, and congrats on two job offers!
