NICU interview!! ...examples of any NICU specific interview questions you were asked?

Hello everyone!

I have been an adult oncology nurse for about 18 months (mostly surg-onc and gyn-onc). I have always wanted to be a NICU nurse ... even before Nursing School. (I became an Oncology nurse by way of a PCT position in Pediatric Oncology.) My husband and I are moving out of state and I decided it was a great opportunity to fulfill my dream!! (I know no one in the new area that is even remotely in the nursing field ... if anyone is in NICU in the Chattanooga, TN area I would LOVE to pick your brain!! :D)

I have just started applying for positions and received the call this evening for the NICU interview!! That's the great news ... the "bad" news, if you want to call it that, is that the interview is on Monday ... THIS Monday! Oh, and I will be interviewed by the Nurse Manager and two Assistant Nurse Mangers. Anyway, I feel well prepared in interview skills (appearance, etc) and basic interview questions (strengths vs. weaknesses and basic nursing questions); however, I feel at a complete loss for NICU specific interview questions. I have been (and will continue) searching allnurses.com and other websites. However, it finally dawned on me to just ask!

I would love to hear your NICU interview experiences and any questions you were asked. I found one website that had these questions:

  • If one of the infants in your care showed signs of breathing difficulty, what would be your first response?
  • If two infants both showed signs of distress at the same time and no one else was on duty, what would you do?
  • How would you resolve a dispute with your superior regarding treatment?

and more technical questions:

  • What is the purpose of ultrasound and how would you use this technique?
  • What is meant by fetal monitoring?
  • What is the Glomerular Filtration Rate and what does it measure?

Are these good examples or too specific?? (I would still really, really like to have more examples if you have any!!)

Thank you all so much!! :yeah:

Hi everyone! I know this post is very old…but just wanted to see if anyone could help me with what types of questions I might see in a Student Nurse NICU interview? I am finishing up my first semester of my BSN and am very excited about my interview :)

Thanks!

The question that got me my NICU job was, "Why do you want to work in the NICU as opposed to other areas?" ( I had worked on a chronic resp. med surg floor) My response was that I wanted to work where there were successes and the patients lived and thrived. I have found the NICU a wonderful rewarding place! It is wonderful to see our babies come back with wonderful results, even kids we thought would have issues.Kids have an AMAZING ability to heal. Good luck to you!!

Interview Questions for a Staff Nurse on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:

1. Why NICU?

2. Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

(there were quite a few scenareo questions)

3. What steps would you take after you realized you had given the wrong medication?

4. How would you handle a parent who was informing you that he was really annoyed at the care a nurse provided from the previous shift?

5. A family who are known to child services come and visit their baby on NICU, they bring with them their 3 other children, one of which has bruising in a non typical area and you think it may be suspicious. How would you act upon this?

There was also a question asking you to prioritize 3 babies who are in your care and have multiple tasks to be seen to at the same time. the 1st baby was soiled so needed cleaning and changing, the 2nd baby's parents had just arrived and were very keen to receive a full update on their baby, and xray had just called to say they were on their way to xray the 3rd baby's chest.

Hey guys, question regarding reference letter to Anmac. What if my direct supervisor or any supervisors I had previously were already retired, or migrated somewhere or just stopped nursing. Who can I obtain them from? It says in Anmac FAQ that your reference must be an RN or midwife whi directly supervised you.

Thanks
