I have done NICU for 31 years. Get the general peds experience first! There is so much to learn about organizing and doing general care that you will not get in an NICU. I am so glad, although I didn't want to,they made me have a year on a med-surg floor. I am so glad I did it but I would be VERY hard pressed to be able to do anything but NICU at this point. Always keep your med-surg or other area open for yourself!
  2. The question that got me my NICU job was, "Why do you want to work in the NICU as opposed to other areas?" ( I had worked on a chronic resp. med surg floor) My response was that I wanted to work where there were successes and the patients lived and thrived. I have found the NICU a wonderful rewarding place! It is wonderful to see our babies come back with wonderful results, even kids we thought would have issues.Kids have an AMAZING ability to heal. Good luck to you!!
  3. I agree, you know what you do and how hard it is,what you do every day. I have friends and a BF,even my senior bosses,in the past that have said "You feed babies!" I work in NICU,yes I feed babies.....I also drawn blood and insert IV lines into thread sized veins. I suction and maintain ET tubes and chest tubes,I "cool" babies, I assist doctors and make sure they order what needs to be ordered to progress to discharge....I am sorry but nothing would progress in my unit if we didn't! I deal with Moms and Dads that are very upset, worried, angry or depressed. I am confident in the fact that what I do is important, stressful and tiring. If they don't get it their problem!
  4. I have heard of this happening in daycare situations also.
  5. We give donor milk to babies all the time. It is treated before we give it and it labeled to be scanned as donor milk.Mom's milk is labeled and scanned as that Mother's milk.
  6. I don't get why this would be wrong. You should know how to take care of them. I have worked in NICU for 30+ years and they float us to Post Partum and L and D! I have never taken care of a baby who had had a baby! I think they will try to float anyone anywhere.
  7. How can you block a number from an employer? What if they want something besides you working an extra shift? They think it is ringing and you never hear it?
  8. We do skin to skin with UVCs but not UACs. We do it when the baby is stable enough to be held, the UAC is not needed by that point. We have had no issue with infections.
