Neonatal Certification

Specialties NICU

So, tell me... is the NCC exam really difficult?

I've been in a NICU for over 3 years. I really enjoy it. I plan to take the exam in a couple months. What will help me most in studying? Test anxiety is my middle name I have always over prepared or I just can't think, but with this exam...well...it's an option, not required, so I haven't been motivated to study.

Any pointers?

Go to www.ccprnet.org for certification study material. Also the Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing is an excellent study resource.

Specializes in Level II & III NICU, Mother-Baby Unit.

I suggest reading over your copy of Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (Third Edition) because it gives a good outline-type review of nearly everything you may see on the test. If you have worked in a NICU full time for 2 or more years you should do fine on the test. I'd suggest reviewing the areas of NICU nursing that you are the least familiar with and to read over the book slowly. I studied at bedtime reading a few pages each night and then falling to sleep thinking about what I read. There is really no way to "cram" for a certification test. Oh yes, I also read over Manual of Neonatal Care edited by John P. Cloherty MD and Ann R. Stark MD which seemed to help me to understand things I was not sure of a little bit more in depth. I think it would be a good idea to be familiar with your Neofax or Neonatal Medications & Nutrition: A Comprehensive Guide (3rd Edition) by Zenk, Sills & Koeppel so you will know about the drugs used with certain conditions, etc.

I took the test through NCC (National Certification Corporation, www.nccnet.org) which focuses on certifying neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses, mother-baby nurses, obstetric nurses, women's health practitioners, etc. They have some good study guides and information on their web site too.

I'm really glad you are interested in obtaining your certification!! Good luck wishes coming your way!! You'll do just fine!
