Just got accepted to nursing school...

and I already know I want to get into NICU. Is there anything I should do to prepare (like start kissing up to the NICU nurse managers or do volunteer work in the unit) to secure a spot or should I just focus on getting through fundamentals and then start doing the above.

Any advice would be great!

Congratulations!You could do an externship at some NICUs, but most won't take you until your second year.In the meantime study, study, study!

I'm hoping to start school in the Spring and I want to get into the NICU too. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but Do they have PCTs in NICU?

Some NICUs have techs/clerks, just to get you used to the environment... Also some have volunteers to hold babies which would give you an opportunity to speak with NICU nurses and doctors and see if it's what you really want to do and learn some things along the way.

Hello and congrats on getting into nursing school. that is half the battle. I just finished my bachelors in nursing this May. I have been accepted in a NICU program which starts in a week. My advice to you is to keep your mind open during nursing school and grasp as much knowledge as you can. You will change your mind several times until you find your true calling. Clinicals are really a good experience to see what your strengths and weaknesses are. The NICU is a special place and I am excited to work there. Good luck in your new adventure.:nuke:

Also.. your first semester just study study study.. don't worry about being a tech until your second or third semester. I never was a tech and I got a job in the NICU. GOOD LUCK..

clerking or PCAing is an option, depending on the unit.

Of course, with the week I've been having, my biggest recommendation is before you go into NICU is to be prepared that it is not a happy place. There are happy endings, but there are also some of the most heartwrenching and breaking endings you can imagine.
