CPAP/Hood/Vent Setups

How often does your unit change out these setups? Currently we change all of ours every 4 days. I would think that the vent tubing is important since it's blasting straight into the lungs, but I'm not convinced that a hood or cpap setup should require the same??? I'm curious to see what others do. Also, our charge nurse brought up the fact that we haven't been getting the babies new cpap prongs q4d just tubing, so are we doing any good. My theory is that they are probably very $$$ and rinsing them w/soap and water should be sufficient. I work at a county hospital and am always looking for ways we can save $$.

Our RT's change out the vent/CPAP circuits once a week, sooner if the baby changes ventilation modes. We don't tend to have a baby under a hood even that long but I would assume those would get changed after a week, as well. CPAP prongs/masks get changed when they need it... hence they can go longer than a week. Sometimes a lot longer. They are just cleaned or wiped off unless they get really crusty and nasty or fall on the floor. They're stocked and available for us to switch whenever we want. We used to change NC and water every week also, but have switched to only as needed.

We are a private hospital.

Our vent tubing is changed every 72 hours...we had a huge outbreak of pseudomonas a few years back and they were questioning the vent tubing and water. Our cannulas get changed when they are icky, the water bottle is changed also every 72 hours. CPAP prongs...only when really icky...we clean them out with Q-tips and alcohol. We are a county hospital.

Dont forget to keep an EYE on the Nose when using CPAP, we had a kiddo suffer a pretty severe erosion to the left nares while on CPAP, Plastics are in her future, and the parents are none too happy... Just wanted to pass this along....

Our vent/cpap tubing is usually once a week too, Those Oscilator Circuits are Expensive though, so Im not sure how often they get changed.....

Once a week here too. Prongs PRN, they are VERY pricey and hard to get your hands on.

Hello.

I am working in a home and I need to know if the tubbing has to be changed or washed because the package saids to not wash just throw it. And we have 3 sets for one month supply. Thank you.

We change our bubble cpap circuits q7 days. Our babies rarely stay on the vent for 7 days, so we end up throwing out the vast majority of the circuits when the baby goes to bubble CPAP. If a baby is on a vent longer than a few days here, they are too sick to have the circuit messed with.
