Who is hiring upstate?

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello! I'm a new grad-BSN and I keep reading suggestions on these threads about NYC that upstate is hiring. My question is where? I've seen the suggestion of Albany Medical Center, so I've got that on my list. I'm also interested in new grad residencies, I've applied to some in North Carolina/Tennessee. I'm willing to move anywhere for a job!

Thanks all!

Hi! I'm an RN who graduated upstate but originally from the Queens area. Try the Rochester and Buffalo area. From my experience so far I think it is less stressful to seek a job in the upstate area. I have now been applying to jobs in the NYC area (trying to return home) for half the year now and have had very little luck unfortunately. But anyhow, during my orientation upstate I have seen new graduates from the NYC area. I will say that when you call the recruitment office- I think they want you to be specific in which area of nursing you would like to pursue. The big difference is that up here it is OKAY to call a recruitment office after applying to check the status of your application. That's the BIGGEST yet most meaningful difference I have seen between NYC and the upstate area. Last year it seemed to me that they want to see pure interest from a candidate whose not just willing to take "any nursing position available". So specify areas such as "Telemetry," "Cardiac Cath Lab" "OR" "Behavioral Health" etc. etc.

Rochester Hospitals: URMC, Unity, RGH

Buffalo Hospitals: Women & Childrens Hospital of Buffalo, Kaleida Health is a big one.

Those are just to name a few. Hope I helped.

Thanks for the reply, Joyel17. I read on a thread the Buffalo area grads were having a hard time finding jobs, is that still true? I read the gov't is putting money into revitalizing Buffalo, so that could be a cool place to live. Rochester sounds like a possibility. I was looking in rural areas, like Corning, but they all seems to have part-time only. I think I am making the mistake of applying to everything. I'm not applying to ICU/ED though, just anything med-surg.

Does anyone know of residency programs upstate that are particularly good or cities with more of a shortage?

Ew, Buffalo ... those winters!!! Yes, I've lived there, and it gets nasty during blizzards. NewYorkerGirl, have you tried Stony Brook on Long Island? They hire new grads to med-surg all the time.

Cool Paco! Thanks! I have family in Shirley so that could work out for me. The cost of living on LI is brutal, though. Is the pay enough to make it work?

Yes, the pay is quite decent. Probably about $10k lower per year on avg than NYC pay but much better than FL or even upstate NY. Most people dont complain about the $$ and the benefits are excellent! Plus, there is plenty of overtime so making up the difference with the occasional extra shift is possible. I heard last year one nurse there made $90k in overtime alone :o ... This even made the news. Add that to the base and that's a nice paycheck :D but that's overdoing it I think lol.
