Skip Pre Req's And on to Nursing

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello all,

I was wondering is there any way for me to skip all these pre Req's in my college " Psy, Soc..etc.."and somehow sign a contract with a hosp. ... ummm say like Mount Sanai, And attend they're program. Im not trying to imply on skipping my Nursing classes, but the unnecessary ones like psy.

hi... why do you feel that these classes are unnecessary?

not to play devils advocate, and, yes, I wasnt a great fan of psych and socialology... (sorry bout the spelling... brains fried from a week full of finals)

BUT...

they're necessary-- why? because, when you deal with people, its a good idea to know why they think how they think... and, its also important to study social structure-- why we are how we are... the classes are for a reason... a nurse is more than a pill-pusher... we are highly educated people-- and, sometimes we forget that in the school phase of our careers, but it does pay off in the career phase.

hense.... why i've never heard of a 'contract' to skip classes... they're there for a reason... even though we may not enjoy taking them at the time.

best of luck

Estrellita....

I have to agree with Yeti. Those classes are very much so necessary........they help you understand why patients act and behave the way that they do....and it makes it ever so much easier to relate with them....they also help make you a well rounded person educationally wise.

I am very curious as to why you feel that classes such as psych and sociology are unnecessary.......

I can tell you I have never heard of signing a contact with a nursing school like that and I can tell you in this day, I am 100% sure that you will never find someone willing to let you by pass those classes either, unless you took them in a nother school and they are matriculated with the nursing school you wish to attend.

Estrallita, If I recall from looking at Mount Sinai Hospital's website, they require a BSN which means that you will have those classes as well as many others. Being a nurse, you are a patient advocate, that means you need some basic understanding of the psychological process as well as an understanding of how society plays a part. You are going to be dealing with people of all different ethnic groups in NYC, you will definitely need some basic understanding on how to talk to different people.

Specializes in most of them.

Now a days there are indeed many classes that may seem to be Useless. However they expand our minds, introduce new ideas and ways of thinking. And with such diverse cultural patterns and people with different ways of looking at things than ourselves in this country, psych and soc. provide us with flexibilty and a base for approaches to our clients to get them to agree to medical care. Give it a shot. Not everything in life is reached by a direct shot. Sometimes you have to go around the mountain to get to the top.

A good education helps us become a base for a good nurse. Life will provide the filler.:)

I just grduated from Nursing school in December and am preparing to take the boards. I used to think the same thing. Why do hey make us take thee unimportant clases? Well, let me tell you, I m glad they did. How else would I be able to answer those pediatric stages of developement questions? Bite the bullet and learn as much as you can from these classes. You'll be amazed at how much you need these.
