Moving to NYC, need advice!

U.S.A. New York

Published

i recently graduated with my bach's in nursing in florida and am interested in moving to nyc. i passed my nclex and have recently starting working in a psychiatric ward in a state hospital as a charge nurse(this month). i have a few questions regarding a move to nyc i was hoping you all could help with! by the way, getting to nyc as soon as possible is my goal. i understand it would be safer to get a years worth of experience under my belt in fl before trying to make the move, especially if i want a specific department, but i am aggressively trying to get there....even if it means extending the job search and hanging it out there a bit.

1. how difficult would it be to find a job in nyc without having a year of experience under my belt? will i get turned away at the door? i am looking specifically at psychiatric nursing and would be open to working in private clinics as well. also, im aware the job search could take longer if i hold out for it.

2. if moving to nyc is my ultimate goal, and assuming i had a place to live for a few months, how beneficial would it be to live in nyc while i job search as opposed to doing it from fl? im assuming it would help out tremendously, i guess i am just curious as to how quickly i might be able to land a job if i am actively looking in the city vs from afar?

3. if my apartment is in manhattan, do you guys have any recommendations as to which hospitals might be within an hour and a half commute? that's about the max i would like to commute before thinking about moving to another borough.

any and all advice would be greatly appreciated, so feel free to throw in your two cents!

thanks!

Does anyone have any updates for the job market for new graduates?

Hi NYCRN16,

I found your post very helpful! $10,000 is the number I had in my had for savings prior to moving up there. You seem like you know the NYC job market and overall living experience very well...would you be able to answer a few questions for me? Like the person that originally started this thread, it is my dream to move to NYC. I'm originally from LI, have family in the city and have always wanted to move back (we moved to FL when I was 6). NY is in my blood!

I have 2 years experience on a surgical oncology unit (mastectomies, lots of head and neck patients so have exp with larys and trachs, whipples, colorectal surgeries, etc) and started a job in pediatric hem/onc in January. I knew I wanted chemo experience prior to moving, and have been getting a lot of that at my current job. I know I want to stay in oncology, just figuring out if I def wanna say in peds. Of course my ultimate dream is to work at MSKCC! Don't even know where to start regarding getting in there, though.

Anyway, I would like to move to NYC around Feb of next year (if I have enough money) but I'm deciding if I should get up there via travel nursing or try to find a permanent job. I'm a little wary of the travel nursing thing, and I know that NYC is where I want to be permanently. What is your opinion on this? Also, about housing...I have bad credit as a result of bad decisions I made back in college, but I have a perfect rental history. What are the chances a landlord will accept me? Feel free to email me [email protected] or reply here. I would really appreciate any advice/insight! Thank you so much.

im so sorry I just came across this response, I'm sure you have probably made your decision by now but I'll answer anyway just in case.

i would come up here as a traveler, in order to make sure that city life is really for you and to get a feel for NYC nursing. That way if you decide that you would rather enjoy the city as a tourist instead of a resident, then you went there on a working vacation and didn't waste thousands of dollars moving.
