Ah, the thousand dollar question. But frankly, Nurse pt ratio isn't everything.

Previous assignment night shift:

1 nurse to 6 pts, no charge, no unit secretary, one aide for 25 pt's, no iv help and often out of supplies. One RT for whole 200 bed hosp

This assignment night shift:

1 nurse to 5 , sometimes 6 but maybe 8 when we're running short of RN's, if we have five we share an aide with another RN, if we have 6 or more we work with our own aide.

Facility always has two float nurses to assist for acuity and admits.

Charge nurse on floor

Unit secretary

IV therapy nurse

RT assigned to 2 units (40 beds)

Lab On call - in facility

Pharmacy help on call - in facility

In this case, I'll take the higher ratio, I actually get to do nursing, not just med passing.

where do u work I would love to take that job, where I work the nurse patient ratio if where lucky is 1:8 regularly its 1:9, where lucky if we dont have to do our own fingersticks, discharges and admissions, cna on average have 8 patients, So pleasess do tell me where u work, we can change positions. :)

Specializes in Pulmonary.

1:8???

Right now, on the med/pulm floor I work on, during the day it's 1:4 or 1:5. Unit secretary, 1 RT (we have up to 8 vents plus HFNC and other respiratory stuff). At night, it's 1:7 or 1:8 with an RT. The tech's have about the same patient ratio as the nurses.

The other hospital where I used to work was 1:5 on all shifts, techs 1:10. No dedicated RT.

Somehow I'm missing the idea here. Yup, 1:8 max and I ONLY work night shift, also different acuity - no vents, dedicated RT and lots of other help.

The problem with basing a comparison on strictly nurse to pt ratio is that it really doesn't tell you a thing about the facility or assignment.
