Please Help-Ramapo or William Paterson?

U.S.A. New Jersey

Hey sorry guys if I posted this in the wrong section. I am a senior in high school and I need to decide on which college to attend. My top two choices are these two schools, William Paterson and Ramapo(both in New Jersey). I am wondering which one has a better nursing program. I am very confused on making my decision. So it would be great help if I could get some input.

Thank You.

I will be graduating from Ramapo this Friday with my BSN. It took me 5 years to complete the nursing program because I switched my major. At Ramapo, you either are placed at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood or Englewood. If you live on campus, Vally is closer and you do not go to the hospital every day. If you are placed at Englewood, all of your clinical and classes are there and you have to drive quite often. The downside is that you do not choose where you are placed.

If I were you I would look into the types of clinical experiences you will get from both schools. This is something I was not aware of. At Ramapo, if you are placed at Valley you only do clinical at Valley and you are not exposed to much. You want to get accepted into a nursing program that has various clinical experiences. Overall, Ramapo is a good school. You have to evaluate what is best for you as far as cost, location, etc. Good Luck

Thank you for your response. So it would be better to do clinicals at a bunch of different hospitals as opposed to just one? William Paterson has a bunch of different hospitals for clinicals. Was there a lot of help/guidance available to you as a nursing student?

In the end, I am kinda glad that I went straight for my BSN although it was expensive. As far as the quality of the courses and some of the instructors, I was a bit disappointed. There are some instructors who teach up to four courses. I found that when you have the same teacher for almost all of your courses, the quality of teaching is poor. I would have liked to experience clinical in different hospitals for the experience. Reason being, if you only practice in one hospital you do not have the chance to see how other facilities operate. My suggestion would be to compare and contrast both programs.

Just an FYI, more than likely, you will not begin your clinical courses until your Junior year so you do not need to worry too much. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot.It really helps to hear someones input.Anyone graduated from William Paterson?

Hey i am currently a junior at william paterson and i love the nursing program that i am in. it has its brutal times but thats nursing. we started our clinicals sophmore year i was at st joes and in wayne and at humc next semester i will be at st joes in paterson. i love the fact that we get the opportunity to go to different hospitals bc u get to experience a different atmosphere. i also hear that hospitals prefer nursing students from william paterson so hopefully ive helped you :)

hi!! can u tell me more about the program at wpu? i got accepted into the accelerated program. do u know anything about that? Iam sure its hard but i want to know what u think of the professors and how intense the work is? id appreciate ur comments, thanks.

Hi bdogan,

I also applied to William Paterson's accelerated program, and I'm waiting to hear back from them. Did you end up going to WPU? I'm wondering what you thought about it-- the atmosphere, the professors, fellow students, etc.. and where you lived while you were there.

Thanks a lot!

hi wherescara,

I like the program and i do recommend it. You start in the summer, then fall, spring, and summer again. The summer classes are extremely long but i feel that you get a break during the fall and spring semester cuz its a regular 3.5 months long classes. I like the professors and the chair is always there for you. They prepare u real well for NCLEX adn make u take so many online tests. If u dont take them, then your grade doesnt get posted. Iam in now in my junior level and if i do well this semester i can continue on to the summer and hopefully finish. However, the exmas are very difficult. everythign is multiple choice but you really have to study hard especially if your in the accelerated program. clinicals are great also, they have many affiliations with many different hospitals so you get to experience different hospital settings which i think is great. if you have any other questions PM and i hope this helped! good luck

I am a graduate of WPU's nursing program and I felt VERY prepared for working in the hospital afterwards. The teachers were great, really listened to the students, the exams were hard, but working is harder ;-) I passed the NCLEX with flying colors and am preparing for my masters now. Good luck!

I actually got into WPU off the waitlist, and have paid my deposit already =) starting in less than a month!!! thanks for all the info :redbeathe

Congratulations and good luck!
