Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

I wish there was a way to find out how many people have taken the test...

Do any of yall have any recommendations for jobs (part time) in some sort of medical environment (dr's office, hospital, etc.) for when we are in the nursing program?! I work full time at an advertising agency and they won't allow me to go part time when the time comes so I am going to be in trouble when that happens!! I would rather have something in a medical environment to get the "juices" flowing!! ;-)

I have done some searching online but it is so labor intensive tryin to weed thru all the other jobs when you search "medical", "healthcare", "dr office", "hospital"...as I'm sure you can imagine!! So I'm hoping someone might have some suggestions that I haven't thought of.

Hey TODAG90,

Just FYI, on web it says 15 per section...that just opens the course online. There will be 90, they eventually increase the number. The same thing happened in levels 2 & 3. We had 82 people that passed level 1 and were going onto level 3, but level 3 only had 60 seats open...they just increased the number of seats. I thought the same thing when I saw level 1 for the first time....you'll see your name on one of those seats soon...

Fisherman,

Thanks so much for that information,I was hoping it was something like that.. Maybe some times people do look TOO deep into things, when it could really be something as simple as that.

And I hope you are right! I would love to see my name on one of those seats, absolutleyy Love it.

:)

Hi To All,

When the sections are open , you won't see names of what teacher has which section, but IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET PROFESSOR McMorifice...YOU WILL KNOW YOUR STUFF AT THE END OF LEVEL 1

Thanks for the information fisherman:)

Hey fisherman, while you are on the board, would you mind telling us a little bit about the program and the course load. Do you have to write papers? How long does it take you to do your care plans? etc:)

I have a few minutes between BS. Ok level 1 I had all 3 nursing courses plus medical office terminology and a wex class. That equaled 12 credits. My med term & wex were from 4-7 both on mon & wed, so thats out of the way. We only had Pharm 1 day a week..It is "Taught" by a teacher, but basically its self taught...DO NOT BUY THE NEW CALCULATE W/ CONFIDENCE, it sells for about 85, you can get it on half.com for $0.25 + s&h. For all your books check out dealoz.com , have the isbn # and they will tell you who has the books at the cheapest prices. Back to pharm, you have to pass a math exam at every level, you get 3 chances to pass..then you have 4 tests..ea test covers about 10 chapters of drugs, reactions, and all that good stuff. Then you have physical assessment..it is the most important class SO PAY ATTENTION..you have 4 tests also..the 1st is on about 18 chapters, then onto FUN-DA-MENTALS..not so much fun, boring ..but it give you a foundation..there are 4 tests, the last is cumulative and the first test is on about 26-28 chapters...SO NOW U HAVE # CLASSES ALL W/ A LOT OF READING TO BE GIVEN DAYS APART..this is all to prepare you for clinical which starts after your 6th week. In clinical, it's basically bed/bath..knowing your drugs and doing nursing notes. Then the fun of 1 process recording report and 2 care plans...Some say you can have a life and still work while going to school, but if you still intend to party w/ ur friends, you're not going to retain the info..you have to immerse yourself in the whole thing. So the classes were mon-thurs from 8-12 & 8-1 for some..I hope I answered some of your questions. If you want --just ask a question and I'll b happy to help anyone....PS..when you get in the program..find people in different levels and just go up & start a conversation..find out who they had, what helped them...don't forget besides the reading, you also have the power points and the papers..

In the beginning care plans are so effen confusing..it gets easier..they will give you a course outline of books to get..GET THE EXTRA BOOKS on test taking skills.....oooh gtg..let me know what else you want to know..I have a lot to say once you get into the program.....F clock.png

Thanks Fisherman:) I would really like to know about physical assessment. How does that work? Do you have to perform a task in front of a group and your professor? We are all adults here, but it could be nerve racking(sp?) especially the first few times if there is an audience. What hospital do you recommend, if we have the option of choosing, for clinical? I know you are busy. So feel free to come back to these questions when you have the time.

But do come back though, lol:)

hi moojie,

i get all my alerts thru my cell, so it give me an excuse to take a break now and then...ok physical assessment is what it means. how to assess the body. you will never be in front of the class doing anything ( not in level 1 )the teacher will go on n on n on about the functions of lets say the lungs, and she would in return tell/show you how to assess the lungs..the newer version of the book can go upwards of 80-115, i bought the previous version for $10.00 its the same stuff, only the chapters are mixed up ( you go to the library and get the new version & cross reverence the chapters --so you know which ones you are required to read for that test ). during orientation they build you up so much that you want to have the best of everything, including the newest books, so they give you a break so you can go get your bundle of books for 380.00+..i got all my books +care plan books & nclex books for all 4 levels for less than that~don't fall for it..back to pa..like i said, it take one system at a time ( cardio, neuro, musc. ...) and tells you how to assess it , what are the signs/symptoms if something is wrong. you will get validated on certain things-mainly on the test, but you will be called in 1 at a time to do an assessment on the lungs. by the end of the level you should be able to do a complete head to toe assessment of the body..here is a link to a mini assessment.....http://davisplus.fadavis.com/dillon/videos.cfm

its only 12 mins long, but there is more to it..just a tease...when you get in the program, you will have access to all the nursing videos that you will be validated on..some are done in person , some by videoing yourself and submitting...ok..break time is over..back to do spanish homework and study for finals next week...fivbomb.png

Oh, that is not as bad as I thought!

And thanks for using your break to reply to my questions. It is good to know that the books are far cheaper for the same material. They pulled that same crap with me for AP1, strongly recommending the newest versions of everything...so glad I did not listen. We do not even use them. It's all on powerpoint...

And speaking of ppts, you mentioned them on your last post. What kind of presentations are assigned? Any research papers, etc?

Hi Moojie...seems like only 5 mins ago I was chatting w/ u..I got a text that grades were up..I'm carrying a strong B+ave. They say that level 2 is the hardest and 1/2 of your class doesn't make it thru...Ok, back to power pts...everyday its power points, some teachers test only from their points others will ask, what color underwear did Florence nightingale wear...In level 1 you have to do a community service project, so if their are 30 in your class ea set of ten does 1 project. Other than that its only the process report n care plans, level 2 report, plans, a teaching plan, and a narrative ( the last 2 - don't even worry about them )..level 3 you have the same stuff, but now add a discharge plan..and so on...but all thru level 1,& 2 so far you have to do your bed/ bath. It's exactly what it says. You may have a 300lb man, who is incontinent, feces everywhere, IV's hanging, tubes coming out of diff orifices and you have to give him/her a COMPLETE washing, and change his bed ( some hospitals don't have fitted sheets ) while he/she is still in it-you hope they are going for testing soon so you can change it while they r gone, but no..you change it then.

These darn texts keep throwing me off subject, ok so there are no research papers and to answer your last Q about the hospital...you don't have a choice..its usually a tues/wed or wed/ thurs clinical from 8-1. I took the 1 no 1 wanted ALL DAY SATURDAY at hackensack from 7-5 then 8-6..it gives you more time to spend with the patients, you find out more about the procedures and what they have in them ( as far as tubes ).Always ask y they have it, what caused it, did they have any signs/symptoms..always ask ask ask ask questions..IMHO Valley was the nicest, from the staff to how clean the place is..Hackensack, you think of this brand new hospital..yuk...there are sheets over here, towels over there, booties on the other side of the room....Valley had everything in 1 room...I haven't been to St. Joes but I heard 1 day they had no diapers, or clean sheets...Are doin your clinical, you'll think twice of that nurse who you think is doing nothing while you want your breakfast tray..you'll also think twice about everything you do......Last word of the evening..SAFETY..WASH YOUR HANDS..WASH YOUR HANDS...WASH YOUR HANDS...FIV

B+ is awesome. And I heard about the "Florence Nightingale" detail nazi on another thread, lol. I really hope I do not have to deal with that! I like interesting little facts, but that seems OD. Where did you do the CPR training? Where do you buy the uniform? Again, TY for your help:)
