ABSN at NJCU or UMDNJ

U.S.A. New Jersey

Hi Everyone, I am just wondering as to your thoughts between NJCU and UMDNJ? Rutgers is my first choice. Which of these schools has a better reputation in your opinion? I think I would go for NJCU because one would be done sooner. But, I am just wondering if UMDNJ is a better name/reputation which one should consider for applying to graduate school and for the job market. I know Rutgers has a great rep, but I might not get in there and these are my two back up schools. Thanks!

lol! nope.... am kind of new to this website and i think its interesting though. my comment was intended for someone else... my bad....

hi Glad2baSN! did you have to write an entrance exam upon acceptance ? if yes how difficult was it? can you give your honest opinion about the program.. is it doable? if i may ask, what was ur undergrad gpa as well as science gpa? thanks

Absolutely not. UMDNJ is in the heart of the ghetto. At the informational session we were advised to only park in certain areas as cars are frequently stolen in broad daylight. It's in an environment where you don't hang around after classes.

I personally found Rutgers-Newark's nursing school to be far more aesthetically pleasing. It actually felt like I was part of a campus setting with coffee shops, etc. nearby. I just felt alot safer.

am sorry 2bEsqtoRN, you are wrong about this whole rutgers/umdnj thing. rutgers, umdnj, njit and essex county college are located at the same place and i guess just 2 minutes drive from each other. cars are even stolen around rutgers at gun point so i am kind of lost as to what you're talking about. there is no difference though... rutgers is more beautiful but not 100 percent safer.

Also are you a Rutgers alum (kidding!)[/quote

are you still here chiasmus? lol.... i was thinking about rutgers but their prerequisites are crazy.. but with umdnj, i have only sociology that i would like to clep next month.. how far are you with yours?

2bEsqtoRN your comments about the city of Newark, Rutgers/UmdnJ is absoleutely false. Security issues are 100% the same. Also hope you realize the crime does in fact occur in any major city regardless of its location. Tri State area(NY,NJ,CT and down south (NC,GA,TX) plus orginial thread was about NJCU or UMDNJ... at the end of the day UMDNJ/RUTGERS and NJCU are all good schools but UMDNJ ABSN takes in more applicants.

Never have I quantified the safety of Rutgers v.s. UMDNJ. 100% safer is completely far-fetched.

To reiterate, I stated that *I* felt safer on the basis of surroundings. And I am fully aware that major cities have crime, but Newark, NJ is considered one of the most violent, crime-ridden cities in the US, making it considerably less safe than, lets say, a Chapel Hill, NC.

As for your comment on all three being good schools, I think passage rate of the NCLEX determines quality, don't you? Rutgers NCLEX passage rate is 80%, NJCU's, 83% and UMDNJ's 90%. As much as Rutgers claim to be more selective than UMDNJ, their passage rate of the national exam doesn't reflect it.

Key phrase in your statement: "I guess".

Let's base it on the map, shall we:

A - Rutgers

B - Essex County College

C - UMDNJ

D - NJIT

While UMDNJ may very well be in close proximity to the three other institutes of higher learning, it is certainly closer to the dumpier part of Newark, NJ.

Well, I'm confused because when I was at Rutgers Newark I saw UMDNJ right down the road... Maybe they have buildings throughout Newark? I am actually looking at the crime report for UMDNJ it is pretty scary.

University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ: Public Safety, Annual Security Report

So I took a closer look at the 2010 crime report for UMDNJ and its noted that they have had 3 robberies, 5 aggravated assaults, 2 burglaries and 4 vehicular thefts ON CAMPUS. And that's just those that have been reported, not including crimes that occurred immediately outside campus grounds.

regarding your umdnj class, about how many people graduated and about how many people failed out? how many people started in total?

TobEsqtoRN - I graduated from Rutgers Law School in Newark in 1987. The City was much more dangerous then than it is now. I think all of the schools and hospitals have great security. I would have no qualms about going to nursing school in Newark. I grew up in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Boston and only was the victim of one assault (in a nice NYC highrise). If you're so worried about safety, go to some suburban town (where you're chances of being creamed by an SUV are alot higher than your chance of being mugged in Newark). Sad to see that these misconceptions about Newark are still so prevalent.

I'm not quite sure what the past has to the present. Just because Newark is now a safer city than it was back then does not mean its suddenly as safe as other cities in surrounding areas. It's not. And that's coming from someone who currently attends school in the heart of Newark. There are still robberies, cars remain stolen and the crack addicts still run rampant. It not a misconception, it is a reality and it is what it is.

Doesn't matter if you go to Rutgers or UMDNJ any more they are as of July 2013 UMDNJ's Nursing program will be called the rutgers school of nursing because rutgers has taken over UMDNJ. Also they are around 7 blocks from each other so for someone who says they know the area is one thing I live in the area all those Universities and Colleges are a stones throw away from each other. There is Crime everywhere I was born and raised in Brooklyn and it's the same thing you have robberies around Certain college campuses to same in Baltimore in College Park over there. Crime is everywhere just always be alert wherever you go.
