NHCTC-Manchester / questions on NLN test

U.S.A. New Hampshire

Published

Hello other New Hampshire-ites!

I'm currently taking A&P I and hope to take A&P II this summer, followed

by micro in the fall. I hope to apply next Feb. for the Fall '07 entry. I'm worried about the NLN test. I already have a BA in liberal arts, so I've taken

the SAT's (although MANY years ago!). How does the NLN test compare to

the SAT's? What are the best study tools or books? Any advice would

be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello Tamsue:

I used the RN pre-entrance exam book by Mary Macdonald. It has a yellow cover. It was a very good resource and covered the three areas of the NLN (Math, Science and English). The math section was very good because math is my weakest subject. That was the only book/resource I used to the study for the NLN. I graduated from NHCTC-Manchester last year and I passed the boards last summer. I can certainly answer questions you have about the program. The NLN is similar to the SAT's in the types of questions it asks. The english section is a mix of grammar, read the story and answer questions, punctuation, etc. The science is anywhere from physics, chemistry, botany, anatomy, (all high school level),etc. The math section is a lot of algebra. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Hello there.

You responded to a question I had in the past re: the NLN. I'm taking the test this Saturday, and I AM FREAKING OUT! I've got one pretty stupid question, can you have a calculator with you when taking the test? I'm taking it at Manchester. Thanks so much!

Tammy

Hi Tammy,

You cannot have a calculator with you when you do the NLN's. Or at least you couldn't when I took them two years ago. Good luck!!!!

How did you do TamSue? Im taking the test this Saturday so any advice you can give me would be much appreciated!

Hi there.

I took the test on Jan. 13. I thought the Math was terrible; I don't feel I did well. You can't have a calculator, and there are 54 questions in 60 minutes. You have to be very quick; I'm good at Math, but I didn't even have time to finish. The science wasn't quite as bad as I had anticipated, although there was a bit of physics, electrical circuitry questions...weird stuff. The math was not difficult questions per se; it was just that you had to be fast. Someone else I spoke with (after the test) mentioned that there were normally only two answers that could work on the math; to try to figure out the answer in that manner...rather than to actually figure out each question independently. Does that make sense? I'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Just don't let yourself get rattled, and Good Luck!

im not quite sure what you mean?

as a side note though- i was just getting my hair done, and was telling my hairdresser about the exam. I had to laugh because she said "oh yeah! i thought i wanted to be a nurse once so i took the test. I bombed it though, it was so hard!"

grreeaaaaat :stone

Hello Again. Sorry for the confusion. A "math wiz" who sat beside me during the test said that, if you looked at the possible answers to the math questions, there would most times be only two "possibly correct" ones. He said that, instead of actually calculating each math question out by hand (and for me it takes a LONG time to do that), he was able to look at the possible answers, and many times at the very least, narrow down the possiblitities. Hope this helps. I should have my scores this week; all I want is a 50 on each.......keep your fingers crossed for me!

I thought that was probably what you meant! Good advice though....must be nice to be a math wiz! I'll definately keep my fingers crossed for you- and hopefully we'll both be in the program this september!

Did you get your scores yet?

Actually I did get my scores. I did better than I thought I did. This gives

hope to everyone else who REALLY THOUGHT THEY BOMBED!!! I literally

came home from the test and sobbed. It turned out I did pretty good. I think the thing that must have gotten me through is that even though you have 54 math questions, you are only tested on 40. Those 40 I must have managed to answer right!!!! How about you....did you get your scores?

Where have you applied?

Nope not yet, they said it would take a couple of weeks to get our scores back.
