is it true the hospitals are laying off RN's ? i heard one hospital just fired all their LPN's?

Yes it is true: UMC,Valley,St. Rose and some others have been doing it for months.

Old article:

St. Rose cites economy in laying off 57 workers - Las Vegas Sun

There might be a nursing shortage, but there is more of a funding shortage by patients to keep up with it.

Read the article closely:

The St. Rose system, with three hospitals in the Henderson and southwest Las Vegas areas, said most of the employees laid off were in administrative and support positions and patient care won’t be affected.

They have gone to great lengths to retain the health workers from how I read the article in fact later in the article they state:

The Rose de Lima Acute Rehabilitation Unit will be expanded from 14 to 21 beds and will help support new program offerings.

and also:

Hospital spokesman Andy North said expansions under way at the Siena operating room and emergency room departments will continue...

Hopefully this isolated restructuring will not panic anyone or lead them to feel there is some sort of tidal wave of lay offs coming. Downturns in funding as stated by cingham in the previous post is a serious issue affecting most markets but I'm sure the front line workers will be the last to go behind all the support occupations.

A better to read line for line was in the Vegas Sun about transparency at St Rose....I'd start stuffing the comment box with praises! I'm sure 40+ comment cards a month for one person isn't unheard of

YES, IT IS TRUE. IT'S NOT just Las Vegas either.

The future of nursing is all up in the air. Nursing has become just like any other major. So, even if a person truly wants to be a nurse -- well, it really is not a smart choice any longer (that's the way it seems to look now).

Too many people with nursing degrees with no jobs, nor career prospects.

Pretty sad. It's not even about the money for most people, it's just wanting to have a stable career. Sheesh, nursing is NOT even a stable career anymore.

I've replied to this respose three timees since it's been post and each one never came up. There are somebasic problems with everything you stated and yet I am not going to go through them again. Cite your sources , nothing has even been secure, and resourceful people know how to not run around acting like chicken little
