Pre-Nursing Student @ CSN Introducing Myself!

Hi everyone! I begin my first class at CSN on December 15th! (Online, SOC 101). My intention is to enter the Full-time R.N. program in 2010. I graduated from high school in 2000 and am very apprehensive about all of the Biology courses we have to take. I have not had a Biology class since my sophomore year in high school (over 10 years ago)! Any tips, tricks, suggestions, etc. would be very helpful. I am extremely motivated and dedicated to learning. The decision to become an R.N. is a decision I have made on my own and, as an adult, I am funding my own education.

I have already emailed my lecture professor (who has a reputation of being difficult according to ratemyprofessor.com), and he confirmed the text and syllabus for Spring '09 is the same as the Fall '08 class (which is published on his website). I am going to purchase the text now and begin reading it to familiarize myself with the material and get a head start before BIOL189 begins on January 20th. My lecture is on the Charleston campus (conveniently 1 mile from my home), but I had to sign up for a lab in Henderson! Fortunately I work in Henderson and will be able to go the lab right after work.

Is it really difficult to get into BIOL189? I've been reading that it is and I feel very fortunate that I was able to get into a lab and lecture on my first try, even if they weren't my first choices in dates/times/locations. I am keeping an eye out on the online registration though because I know people drop often. Also, I think all of the non-paying students get purged from their classes on 01/06 so will this be a good day to check back as well?

Is there anyone else here who is "older" and just beginning their education and/or career? If all goes as planned, I will be 29 years old when I become a licensed R.N.

I also want to add that I have been reading all of the posts on this board and have found them to be incredibly helpful. I'm sorry this post has been so long but I am just so excited to get going! Cheers!

I am also a Pre-Nursing student at CSN. I am taking Mico this semester. I have taken all the other Bio classes but I registered for A&P again to try to get a better grade. I took my other Bio classes out of state though. I am also registered for Soc 101 for Dec 15th(online). And like you I also graduated high school in 2000! Well good luck. Hope to talk to you again.

Should also consider any possible setbacks along the way that might have an effect on your time constraints. Pray for the best but also be prepared to make adjustments along the way and keep focused on completing your goal and not how old you will be at the end. Young people tend to think that way but any goal finished is a great accomplishment and your happiness should definetly out way anything else!Most of all be confident in who you are and what you want. Learn to deal with stress in a positive manner and never give up. There will always be people out there trying to compare themselves to others etc etc don't get caught up in all that focus on your goal and become the best person you can be!!

Congratulations on starting this very exciting adventure!! I was in your same place one year ago next month when I also took Soc101 online. (That class is a piece of cake, by the way!) I graduated high school in 2001...and when I went on to college I was majoring in Communications!! I, too, hadn't taken any biology for SO long!

I started volunteering in a hospital to get some "me" time a while after having my second baby...that's where I decided that I really wanted to go back to school to become an RN! I was recently accepted into the Spring '09 RN program at CSN! So - YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Just keep working hard! I found Bio189 to be quite difficult (though that could have been because of my professor who is known for having about half her class left by the end of the semester). I managed a B, thank goodness! I absolutely LOVED A&P though!! I took them both over the summer at NSC (which I highly recommend doing)! If you have the time and are truly dedicated - taking the faster 6 week course is the way to go! It's intense but so worth it! I really enjoyed those 12 weeks! And then I got those two classes transferred back to CSN right in time to apply to the program. I'm almost done with Micro right now...and I'm so sick of school at this point that I just hope to pass! :bugeyes: But it's not too bad!

My one bit of advice (that I ought to take myself!) is to keep up with the reading/studying. Don't fall behind. There is so much to learn in these Biology classes and you'll do awesome if you keep up with the material! Hey, if I can do this with two little girls and still get good grades and manage to get into the program - You'll do awesome!!!

Oh- and you should look into taking the CNA course! I did that in the spring and loved it!! (Plus it gives you an extra point when you go to apply!)

:spnngwlcm: And 29 is not old to be starting out in nursing! There are people who have been in nursing school in their 50s and 60s! Good luck in school!

Thank you everyone for your advice and well wishes! Also, thank you for Mom2 2Girls (hope I got that somewhat correct!) for suggesting that I take the CNA course. That is an excellent idea! I think I will take it in the summer time as I am already pretty overloaded for classes in Spring.

I am taking SOC 101 online, 4 week course beginning 12/15

BIOL 189 (on campus) & COM 215 (online) *both all semester

MATH 100 B (online, 1/20-3/13)

PSY 101 (online, 3/23-5/15)

I just submitted a transfer credit evaulation request b/c I took ENG 101 at another institution. Hopefully they will accept those 3 credits so I won't have to take ENG 101 at CSN.

For Summer semester I am planning on taking PSC 101 (online) and BIOL 223 so I think I might be able to fit the CNA courses in there. I work full-time 40 hours a week so I may have to make some adjustments as far as that goes. Luckily I have a wonderful boyfriend (hopefully soon-to-be fiance!) that has a great job and is willing to help me in achieving my goals.

Anyway, sorry for being so wordy again. I am just so excited!!!!
