Hi everyone! I'm taking biol 223 and biol 251 for fall and I was wondering if anyone could lend some advice on how to prepare for these classes during my free time this summer? Also, any advice on taking these classes at the same time? Thank you!!

I took those classes together, along with psy 101 and worked full time on top of it. I did nothing to prepare the summer before and managed to have like a 3.5 GPA that semester and I'm no genius, just your average joe student. If you feel like you must prepare, try and get the textbooks ahead of time to go over some of the terminology/vocab. That might be helpful because at times it seems like a foreign language. I also used the anatomy and physiology coloring books. It sounds stupid but they really helped me understand things because I can't draw worth a darn in my own notes. Good luck!

Wow that's amazing! Thank you! Do you remember Who your professors were for 223 and 251?

Thank you! :)

I'll pm you :)

Me and a friend just finished taking 223 & 251 during this spring semester. It's doable, but can get very stressful. It's going to be tougher if you have a lot of obligations outside of school. I found Micro to be easier in both lab and lecture than A&P. After finals I was telling family and friends that I didn't know what to do with myself because I got so used to jumping from one study stress to the next lol. One thing I wish I didn't do was schedule both labs on one day. Some weeks consisted of an exam on Monday or Wednesday with 2 lab quizzes or practical on Tuesday.

If you want to get a jump on studying over the summary, I recommend reading and outlining the chapters in A&P. In my class we started with chapter 1, skipped 2 &3, then covered 4 to whatever number was the last chapter of the nervous system. A couple other programs/apps I use for studying are Studyblue & Evernote. I love those 2 apps. Good luck!

Yikes! I can't imagine both labs being in one day. That's definitely something to avoid. I agree that micro was easier than A&P. When I took them together, I had both lectures on Tues/Thurs with a lab on each day after lectures so I wouldn't have 2 lab quizzes in one day but there were times that I had 2 lecture exams back to back. It was tough but doable. This worked out for me because I was still able to work the other 5 days.

It's funny that you say you don't know what to do with yourself now. I just finished my 3rd semester of my ADN program last week and I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs because I don't have to work today lol! My house is spotless and I wish I could take a day trip to cali or something but I have to work in the morning :)

Yeah it's hard to go from what seems like 90 mph to 0. I used to feel guilty if I watched a couple movies or played a video game because I kept thinking the whole time that I was wasting time that could be spent studying or doing something around the house. My kids' school and extracurricular activities do occupy my time a bit. I suppose the break is good though, I need the rest after the MVA I was involved in a few weeks ago and my 3rd child is due in August.

How was the 3rd semester? I believe that's L&D and pediatric stuff right?

I feel the same way :) at least you have kids to keep you busy, I just have my boring job!

3rd semester was ok, not my favorite. It is L&D and peds but I'm not a fan of pregnant women or sick kids so I'm just glad it's over and I passed. I loved medsurg I and can't wait for medsurg II in the fall!

Are you applying at CSN soon?

Are you applying at CSN soon?

Yes I'm applying for the spring '15 semester. I'm taking PSC 101 & SOC 101 online this summer. I still have 224 to do in the fall so I'll probably get chosen as an alternate and pray for the best. I'll have 28 points. I just don't see waiting from December to practically September with nothing to do if I can do anything to help it.

Did you do your clinicals at UMC this semester? Do you get a choice of where you would like to take the clinicals? I've wondered how all that works.

There's no reason not to apply! I started in the Spring of '13 and I know people that were taking 224 and/or 251 in the Fall before and they were accepted. You should apply once you have your pre req's and teas done and hope for the best! I also had 28 points but that was before they changed the point structure to include math 120. I was accepted on my first application. I didn't even apply anywhere else :)

No, I haven't been to UMC yet. I've been to some LTC in summerlin, Kindred (rehab), St. Rose Siena (medsurg I), Monte Vista/Rawson Neal (Psych), Mountain View (L&D) and Sunrise (peds) and so far I've had good experiences. Unfortunately we don't get to choose a site. You submit a list of your preferences for days and times and hope for the best. I've always been placed in my top choice since they have many to choose from. They also offer an open registration day for those that were placed in a schedule that doesn't work for them to switch into something better but options are limited.

Thanks for the info! I would have asked these questions via PM, but apparently I have to be involved in 15 quality topics before I can send those. Sorry if I hijacked your thread katyc. Hopefully you found the info useful as well :)
