Returning to college and concerned about GPA

U.S.A. Nebraska

Good afternoon!

I am returning to college after a six year hiatus (and three babies!) My first few years in school I was half-heartedly majoring in business, and I must admit that I did not fully commit myself to my classes or grades :scrying:

Nursing has always been a career that has interested me, and after finally getting the courage, I am now completing as many pre-requisites as possible at UNO. In addition, I am volunteering at Children's Hospital (which I love doing), but I work in a non-healthcare field as an auditor. I believe that nursing is my true passion.

Unfortunately, I am concerned about my GPA. It is currently a 3.1. Even if I do my best and get A's in all of my remaining pre-requisites, I am concerned that it will not be high enough to be accepted into any of the major nursing schools in Omaha. My goal is to obtain a BSN, so that someday I will be able to get a masters in nursing as well.

Does anyone have any advice or experience? I know that the colleges here in Omaha are very competitive.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Hey there,

I noticed you posted this message some time ago so I hope you get this. I am also returning to college - after an 8 year hiatus (gosh, I don't feel very old, I'll be 33 on 9/1) and one son who is now 11. I actually had to explain to the financial aid dept. why I had dropped out of school in 1996. I found out that I was pregnant the day before my Fall 1996 semester. My first attempt at college was in 1994. Well anyway, classes began yesterday and it is a totally different experience from a totally different perspective. I'm sure that is how you feel too! We can both appreciate it soooo much more which will help us make the grades! I would definitely let anyone that you can know the situation when applying to school. I think that we should get credit in Life 101:chuckle. How many pre-requisites do you have so far? Have you checked to see if there is a certain time frame that they have to be completed? I thought I read somewhere that some things have to be taken within a certain number of years.

Hope you get this

Yea! A response to my post! :yeah:

If you like, e-mail me at [email protected]. Are you in the Omaha area? So far, I have 75 credit hours, but not all of them are applicable to nursing. I have six classes "pre-requisite" classes left to take, including the two that I am currently enrolled in.

My advisor has not said anything about them being completed in a certain time frame, but I will check with her. Many of the classes that I took really would not apply to most nursing school's requirements anyway.

I totally get what you mean though about deserving credit for Life 101, and I also have a completely different perspective this time around. Congratulations on being brave and going back! It's not always easy to do and little doubts have a tendency to creep in at times. I also dropped out because I was pregnant (unplanned) with my oldest daughter. It's amazing how time flies and she has just started kindergarten this year.

Anyway, it would be nice to talk to someone who is going through the same experience, so I hope to hear back from you!
