MONA

by adpiRN

On the NCLEX, do you think morphine or oxygen comes first for an MI?

I just encountered a Q about this on Kaplan.

I put oxygen because I thought "airway".

But the right answer was morphine FIRST. O2 2nd.

So I guess for the purpose of the NCLEX, we use MONA in that order??

I studied with Kaplan and whenever I approached a priority question I always selected the question that:
1. If I had to do one thing and go home, which action would I perform
2. Which action is the safiest

In this question, If you give the morphine, understand the action of morphing, and its affects on clients with an MI, then selecting this answer would be the best option. Although, O2 does provide the body with the needed oxygen to supply the cardiac system, If you only gave O2 and went home, would your patient survive?

That's my point exactly. My Saunders book said to give O2 first, then Nitrates, THEN morphine...everything says something different.

According to the represenative's from Kaplan, they stand 100% behind their content and rationales. One exam day you will choose one answer, and do exactly like I did, guessed, prayed, then hit the next button....

Well should I guess Oxygen first, or guess morphine first. Because as far as MI medicating goes, I always heard give Nitro first x 3...and if that doesn't work THEN use morphine? I just looked in my Med/surg book, it said nitro before morphine, saunders says it too...what makes Kaplan right?

Was the question asking what would you do FIRST, or what's the highest priority? Morphine would be a highest priority I think, but everything else says do 02 first...

the question was phrased: "which of the following actions, if taken by the nurse is BEST?"

and then the rationale was the priority was to reduce pain, decrease metabolic demand, increase cardiac output etc and that O2 would be implemented after morphine.
