Work for New Grad's in STL

U.S.A. Missouri

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I are originally from St. Louis, but have been living in Detroit, both working as engineers for the past 8 years. The economy is horrible up here, and after 20 years in the automotive industry I have decided to switch to nursing (for too many reasons to describe here). I have been accepted into an accelerated 2nd degree program in MI, but the ultimate goal of my family is to move back home to STL. I am just wondering what the job outlook is for new grads in MO. It is pretty bleak in MI, the hospitals are short staffed, but will not take a new grad or anyone with less than a year of experience.

Your feedback is much appreciated!

I believe that the opportunities here for new grads are pretty good. Most of the people in my class have found jobs already. However, who knows if that will change in the future? The bright side is that even if there is a downturn in the market for a little while, with nursing, things will always pick back up eventually. Do well in your studies, try to work as a patient care tech while you are in school, as employers look favorably on that experience. Networking helps, of course.

Once you are ready to move back to St. Louis, please let me know. I have a lot of friends who are in the nursing field and who might be able to help you find jobs.

You also might want to know that currently new grads are getting paid $19-$20/hr in St. Louis.

Debbie, I just recently moved here to Missouri myself. I am a new LPN. Could you give me any advice as to who is hiring in the St. Louis area. I live in the South City area. Thanks..... Lynn

Hi

I was just reading what you said to person thinking of moving to St. Louis from MI. She is going back to get 2nd degree. I too am working on my 2nd degree in nursing/Maryville. I am finishing up Fundamentals and I am looking for a parttime job in healthcare and unable to find job in St. Louis. Applying online does not work anymore. I wanted to get your opinion on ideas that you might have on what I am doing wrong. Thank you.

Well, for you one you have to have healthcare experience or at least have already finished your fundamentals course. Next, apply, apply, apply. I got a job as a tech in a hospital while in school, and I got that job by applying online to at least 50 jobs or more. I just kept applying. I'd check the hospitals websites every week and just apply to any job that I thougt I qualified for. I'd tweak my resume to meet the job specifics. I just kept applying and eventually I got called for an interview and got the job. Don't give up, just keep applying. Also follow up with the recruiters regarding your resume if you don't hear anything for awhile. Just keep applying and keep calling, eventually something will turn up. Good luck.
